Got a couple at east point last week. Neaps are the go, I usually look out the front of larrakeya then head towards talc head /mandorah area then 6mile bout and east point then to lee point . Usually find then somewhere. Keep a look out for birds. Also take a long sighted decky!

Watch the birds. If there are a couple flying in the same direction, follow them. If you see a whole bunch on the surface, scare them into the air. A few might decide they're hungry and hunt the school down for you again. Some people reckon you should sneak up tuna or wait down current/wind/direction of travel. I reckon if they're feeding, fang it at maximum speed into the middle of them with rod in hand, bail arm over and cast as the boat comes off the plane (don't fall in!). Works for me.

I should clarify- only do it that way if no one else is in the same area after tuna

As previously mentioned, its neaps in the harbour. Especially on the top of the tide when the water is clearest. You need no wind. Well, it's best

:bonk: People doing this pisses me off. Much better if you anticipate the movement of the tuna by watching the birds, move infront of them and stay casting distance away. You'll send the school down and scare them away if you roar into the middle of them. Scaring them will make them flighty for the rest of the day. You might catch one but if you don't scare them you can follow the school and catch many.

Yeah, bit of a cowboy method which is why i said try it if no one is around. We got 25 at Dundee and they resurfaced all day no worries. We had to take breaks bottom bashing we were that buggered!

Comments like the above from fishtank are the reason I don't post on this site. Knee jerk reaction after it was clearly stated only when noone else is around should you use this method.
If FFFrs are wanting the good old days back, and less people trolling for info, try to be more respectful!!
On my last post I gave a lot of info on the fish I'd caught and how I'd caught them to the site and specifically asked people not to push for more info....next post asked where I caught them!!! Then someone discredited my post saying my 2kg braid and 4kg leader was way too light for whiting???
By the way, I use this site for the entertainment value - the fishing posts, the pics - I just love fishing! I don't troll for info as I catch plenty of fish. I don't push for more info because the person posting would have told us If they wanted us to know.

Maybe I'm too sensitive to this form of communication - 38yrs old and never had a facebook account!!
Or maybe some of you need a reality check and show some maturity and respect to others?
They say conversations on this site used to be like the ones you have at the pub. I think they still are - always a few loud mouth know it alls....but it's the quiet ones you need to watch!

While your messing around waiting to drift into the school from 2 km away I will already have my first one landed ready for number two!

The bl..dy things move that quick and feed that erratically I don't believe it makes a difference. If the fish are being that flighty there only smashing small schools of bait and not the big schools that will keep them up for longer periods. IMHO. I rarely have a problem hooking them if I find them in the first place and my theory is the same as above. Fly up as quick as you can, stop a cast length away and in front of the direction of the school if possible and wind like there is no tomorrow.

I agree cuddles
My biggest problem is trying to work out the direction that the school is travelling. They head in all different directions at the same time. I’ve tried the wait and see method and find them resurfacing hundreds of metres away.
I now use the race up and cast into them while the boat is still coming off the plane.

I have had luck with seeing them on the sounder and cast out and drop. Eventually the tuna will find the bait and they are never far away.

Mate I just read all 4 of your post and replies and I can't see where anyone really pushed for more information that would give your game away!! Also I couldn't see where anyone discredited your ability to catch small fish on light gear!! If anything everyone was giving you a pat on the back and thanked you for sharing. Not sure how many pubs you've drank in but the tone in this forum is exactly like a pub, tall tales of slaying fish and friendly banter. Heaps of people on here catch up for drinks and I can tell ya, it's the same and always a bl..dy good night.

Thats what I ment in my post CC. "stop a cast length away and in front of the direction of the school". Fang it into the middle of the school and watch them disapear. Sorry that wasn't clear. The tuna schools in the harbour are usually smaller and flightyer than off Dundee. At Dundee there are football oval size schools at times and fanging it into the middle doesn't make a lot of differance.

Mate this is what the forum is all about. Discussing techniques, learning something off others and find out how others do it. Maybe take a bex and have a lie down.
