Guys,

having never done the vernons before I am after some info.

On the 1st of September 4 of us are planning a trip .. one spot we are thinking of is the South Island of the vernons.

Sat 1st September Tides

0215 - 1.19m
0820 - 7.44m
1454 - 0.58m
2057 - 7.24m

Sun 2nd September Tides

0247 - 1.66m
0844 - 7.17m
1530 - 0.66m
2139 - 6.92m

The 2 boats doing the trip would be a 2x 4.2m with 30/35hp 2 strokes. Each boat carrying 2 people, and some sleeping gear and an esky. Both with GPS and fish finding abilities.

ANY info in regards to whether this trip would be worth wild is appreciated. As we have never gone we have been keen and this is one of the last if not last weekend we will be able to get a shot at it ..

-------

Also on the cards is a beach launch at gunn point and fiddle around there with swags on the beach ..

----

Again any info on the vernons side is invaluable and wont be forgotten ..

Cheers

What is your target species and basic fishing styles going to be? Those are big tides so this will make a difference.

never being there before I guess I would just be trying what the book suggests ..

possibly jumping into the locked holes and fishing in them?

During the slack of the tides, top of high and low, if not doing the holes, fish the channel between gunn point and south island. Drift fishing that same channel too.

Maybe pull into the blue holes of the south island ..

should be fish there.

Hey Unseen,

The tides rip past those islands on neaps so don't like your chances of getting a bait to the bottom with those tides. You could look at chasing GT's and Queenies close to the islands on a falling tide but make sure you leave yourself enoough water to get out again as it falls fast. Watch out if the wind blows against the tide as it gets very messy. Good Luck

Well mate you have picked a difficult tide but you will just need to change how you fish to suit. :catch: You have no chance of fishing the main channel you can try and sneak in behind a reef as the tide drops this pays off at times. You can also try the creek on the east side of the Island as the tide rises this can be tricky because you want to get in there as quickly as possible so it means drifting in as it rises. Live bait is the go for this if you can get it because at times the Jacks are on the chew in there and if all else fails you should pick up Skinnies or Trevs with livies.

If you are cruising around at low tide be warned the reefs come up from 20 meters to nothing in a very short distance. Just ask me I've done a couple of outborad skegs around the vernons over the years. :bonk:

Tight lines old son plenty of room out there to explore

so I have to postpone the trip .. and 4 weeks from now .. neap tides are looking promising. ..

not sure if the others will wait the 4 weeks.

Had abit of info in regards to tactics to use .. will keep it all in mind ..

Any reason why you have to fish the Vernons? There are other choices that big tide are good for. Any where out from Dundee would be good. Loee patches, Bass reef area is good on big tides.
