Not going anywhere near that 45kg fish with these ones but reckon they're in the 30kg range or a bit more. Length was 124, 126 and 127cm. We never weighed them but did weigh two one night, peas in a pod at 117cm and both came in at 27.5kg. All WA lake fish

All night photos. I guess that, after all, barramundi are the kings (no queens in dams) of low light conditions. Good sized fat fish in those photos.

Once they escape into the salt (like what happened at Awoonga and Monduran dams) it takes a while to "acclimatise" before re-establishing breeding populations in areas where wild barra stocks have been depleted by netting (Bundaberg and Maryborough).

Surely escapes happen at Kununurra once excess dam water gets into the lake.

I see some videos of the water colour in Lake Kunnurrura. Was pretty clear. I guess it depends on run-off into Argyle or simply localised run-off below Argyle.

We're not used to fishing in clear (or clearish even) water. Minimum turbidity I've seen in the Fitzroy salt section is about 20 - 25 NTUs.

So... how often does Lake Kununurra "murky up"? How often do escapes over the downstream dam wall happen?

Got some breaking news about a big barra from Lake Awoonga (near Gladstone Q'd). Seeking confirmation.


Any dam barra above 130cm in a dam is certainly big. News is about a 142cm one.

I've only ever seen 1 genuine 100 pound (on old scale) barramundi in the flesh. That was a wild one caught in a fish trap at Yeppoon (CQ) in the mid 60s. Never thought I'd ever see another one or a picture of one.

Until now.

Attached pic is of a 46.5 kg Awoonga Dam ( Gladstone CQ) barramundi from Monday. 102.3 lbs .

Length of 142cm.

7cm longer and 1.9kg heavier than the world record barra caught at Monduran Dam (south of Gladstone in 2010).

Look at the size of 1 scale.

New world record? Nope. It wasn't caught on a rod/reel.

It was found floating in Awoonga. Probably died of old age waiting to be caught.

Kurt in the latest mag says he's caught a 147, I'd love to see a photo!

Biggest I know about of recent times (with photo but no bragmat) is 154.
