SWA Sunday adventure.
Avast!! Finally got away for a boat trip on the "Shabby-Craft" of AKS welding, and went on a Sunday trip for half day.
After hearing about some nice fish getting caught around the area, and me wanting to break the "Bomber Curse," (I hadnt caught a good fish since I was gifted my Bomber shirt, and been wearing it.)
Skipper Jimmy, after painfully waking his 10yo lad, Brodie, 3 times, got myself and Shuggy, aka, the Boss, in the water at SWA at approx 7am. Might I add, hats off to Any guy who take his kid fishing at 6am on a Sunday, and an ever bigger well-done to the kid themselves. Great to see them out there fishing!!
Put the boat in about 7am and went out and along a few creek mouths, with Skipper Jimmy and young Brodie trolling as Shuggy and I flicked from the front. This trip I opted to really give the hard-body lures a go flicking, after trying on the softies for the last dozen or so trips.
First barra came about on a small barra classic, n measured in at about 50cm. Hopes were immediately high, and were even higher after we got 2 or 3 more barra in quick succession. Measuring 40-50cm.
All success was from flicking at snags, and none on the troll this particular outing.
After 4 small barra were landed, and released, Shuggy, quietly casting with his $10 Kmart Rod, and $1.50 Jarvis walker Kmart lure was monstered in a frenzied attack, akin to the finest of Donald Trumps twitter-wars. It didnt matter that the Shuggs rod was missing the last foot of itself, or the fact that Shuggys lure was purely bought for the container it came in, they were now in a battle with a fish that clearly didn't want to come in to land!
The fish spent more time out of the water than in it, while the Shuggy screamed in delight at the aeronautical displays in effect. Within a short time, with its wings clipped, the fish had been forced to land.. Measuring in at 68cm, the fish was as silver as the linings in the clouds above.
Pretty sure his back is still sore after the back-slaps. It was a great fight!
I tried a small barra classic when I caught the first small Barrra, and then switched it up, only to have not one hit. As we pulled up on a corner resembling castle Greyskull, I proceeded to mess around and revert back to my original lure, whilst the guys had a chuckle about my superstitiousness (is that a word?).
Chuckles dissolved when the first cast with the original classic lure was inhaled by a nice fat fish, and we knew it was a nice fish when it it had a huge swirl, and bolted. Surfacing a few times for some vicious head-shakes, (the Kind I give the Mrs when she asks if I've already had dessert,) it made me work to get him at the right angle for Jimmy to net.
Measuring at 74cm, the fish was healthy as, and I was all too stoked to break the curse of the Bomber-shirt... Lucky, because it was about to be relegated to the bottom of the fishing-shirt pile!
After that bit of excitement, the trip maintained its healthy level of morale and excitement, which is definitely a plus when you have a kid fishing with you. You need these good trips to keep them coming back for more, and not glued to those jolly brain-melting screens!
After breaking the curse it was time to try something every Fisher person always dreads: opening a new, untried, un-reviewed lure, that they don't know anything about. Might I say, the Sebile "floating minnow" I was gifted for housesitting a friends house, works wonders, and has a nice wobble in its motion. With much worry, I switched it up, cos let's face it, we all like to try something once, twice if we like it, or if it lands fish!!
The first few casts were quickly rewarded with a nice little barra, about 45cm, thus rendering the new lure a success!
Young Brodie landed a sweet little Barra as well, and his casts increased in accuracy as the day went on, with Jimmy being a great fisher-coach!
So after a great day fishing, it was time to finish up. I love half day trips, with good fish, great company, and only having to use 3 lures for the entire trip.....
Drink-up me hearties! Yo ho..
