Million Dollar Fish Season 3 Opens – A Big Win for Tourism

The famous Million Dollar Fish competition is back for season three and will lure large numbers of fishing fanatics to the Northern Territory, providing a big win for tourism and local jobs.

Minister for Tourism and Culture Lauren Moss said the Million Dollar Fish competition has helped boost the NT’s reputation as one of the best places in the world to fish and season three is expected to attract at least 45,000 registrations, a great boost for the tourism industry.

“Tourism in the Territory directly and indirectly employs more than 15,000 people and the Territory Labor Government is working hard to attract new visitors to enjoy our tourism experiences,” Ms Moss said.

“Season three offers more than $2.1 million in cash and prizes including $1 million for one prized barra. There will 100 barra with $10K prized tags swimming about in Territory waters plus a fantastic haul of prizes to be won just by registering for the competition.

“The Million Dollar Fish competition will be timed to grow visitor numbers to the Top End during our low season from October to February. Anglers are encouraged to travel with their families and enjoy the unique tourism moments and our beautiful landscapes.

MDF ambassador Matthew Hadyen was also on hand to encourage people to register for the competition and provide a few tips on hooking the big one.

“We’ve got 101 tagged barra to be released in Darwin as well as some of the best fishing spots in in the Top End including Kakadu, Katherine, the Tiwi Islands and Arnhem Land regions,” Mr Hayden said.

“Registration is free and just by registering at http://www.milliondollarfish.com.au you can be in the running for the Million Dollar Fish partner prize pool.”

Season three will see more than $91,000 worth of prizes from sponsors up for grabs including two package holidays to Darwin offering flights, fishing safari packages and accommodation, a Jayco Swan Outback Camper trailer worth $30,000, Engel fridges and ice boxes, Shimano Fishing Tackle, and a Can-Am Hunting Edition Quad Bike valued at $14,999 from Territory Power Sport.

Million Dollar Fish season three has had strong support from sponsors including CrownBet, BCF, Lion, Jayco, Shimano, Engel, Territory Discoveries, Territory Power Sports Group and Tourism Top End.

CrownBet Strategic Partnerships Manager Brad Fanning confirmed they will again team up with Info Fish to catch and release the 101 tagged barra.

“Million Dollar Fish is the greatest fishing comp in Australia, and we’re hoping season three will reel in the big one,” Mr Fanning.

“Season three will kick off on 1 October and anglers will be on the lookout for barra sporting a red tag marked season 2017-18 Season 3.

“Season one saw 10 prize-tagged barramundi worth $10,000 each caught and season two reeled in eight barra’s worth $10,000, so we had a total of $180,000 awarded with nearly 90,000 registrations overall.”

Primary Industry and Resources Minister, Ken Vowles, said the competition is a great way to enjoy the Territory lifestyle, and reminded fishos to stay safe and follow fishing guidelines.

“We all need to be responsible on the water and make sure we stick to bag limits,” Mr Vowles said.

“We all love our fishing, and sticking to bag limits will ensure we have a sustainable fishing environment for years to come.

“The free Fishing app, NT Fishing Mate, is another great tool for smart phone users, and is there to help all recreational fishers know the rules and which areas are open to them for fishing.

“Finally, remember to ‘Be Crocwise’ at all times when fishing from land or boat. Beware of warning signs, be vigilant and don’t get so caught up in the excitement of landing the Million Dollar Barra that you forget your surroundings.”

The competition will run from 1 October 2017 to 28 February 2018 and participants must register online at http://www.milliondollarfish.com.au
