Hooked up with a MILF

Post by Melv »

Mother in Law Fish that is.........

Went for a quick run to Middle Arm yesterday, wasn't expecting much, main priority was to sort out an alarm that's been bugging me on the motor and also to get rid of the last of the crab bait and make some room in the freezer for Xmas.

Managed to rustle up a feed with a few pan size Goldies and a couple of crabs for the morning but the highlight was pinning a couple of MILF's. This was the smaller of the two and was probably a good 4kg, the second would have been at least a kilo heavier, they're big, thick set solid fish and pull like a train. A whole heap of fun on the little Stradic. I've pulled 5 off this patch of rocks in the last couple of trips, they seem to be becoming a regular thing or maybe they're just resident fish, not sure. All I know is every time I think I've hooked a Mother of a Goldie only to be disappointed at the first flash of colour. Still, they give the rod a serious workout and put a big smile on the dial just like a MILF should........... :catch: 8)

What are you hooking them on. There are thousands in the harbor but gettting one to bite is the hard part.

Coops, getting them on the 4" Gulp Chartreuse Minnow. Can't find much in the harbour that doesn't eat em. Smelt colour works good too.

Nomad, yeah I thought it'd get more attention than Sweetlip frenzy...... :D

Taste freakin horrible. Fight like trains. Hard to get them to chew though. Have seen schools of hundreds in spawning balls in the harbor so thick we hit them with the electric motor! Rarely get them to eat any thing other than small prawn patterns or the like but have caught them on barra classics. A weird fish when it comes to feeding habits.

Picked mine up last year on a small squid bait over a rockbar that was producing pan sized goldies. Never seen them before that or until this post.

Pulled 6 from the harbour this year. All caught on prawn lures and all pull like trains.

Too bad the Goldies aren't as easy to clean as the MILF.

I reckon the goldies are far easier to clean than Milfs. Goldies only problem is the little pin bone line off the ribs. I cut through them and run my knife either side of the pin bone line and cut them out. Only takes a minute longer. bl..dy milfs have the biggest rib cage in the world and a pain in the back side to fillet in my view, Not that I would ever keep one again.

Good fish, having a ball catching them i bet

both the blubberlips and the Painted Sweetlip pull hard and are great fun to catch,
there are always schools of the blubberlips around the blue holes, very rarely catch them though, have got them on softies and vibes.

caught plenty of the big Painted Sweetlip around the Perons, they eat everything!
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!
