Tassie closes recreational flathead fishery

Talk about bungled boat ramps, net buybacks, marine parks, gun laws etc here.

Tassie closes recreational flathead fishery

Lot of closures lately ...

*Ongoing years-long snapper closure in SA on top of the algal bloom restrictions
*Demersal closure in WA
*Jewfish closure in Qld a while back (since reopened)
*Garfish closure off Perth a while back (since reopened)

Probably others I have forgotten. There's plenty of tightened regulations too eg Tassie squid, Queensland mackerel.

A Tassie trout club member told me last week they just had their worst season, based on years of records. A cormorant plague is being blamed but there's no doubt that changing rainfall patterns and warmer, windier weather that dries out catchments isn't helping.

The Top End holding it together thankfully, with arguably only golden snapper numbers reportedly down in Darwin region, and jewfish off Channel Point. A cracker wet season in the making, with the Daly looking to flood, great news for the 2026 barramundi fishing year.

A good wet should be good for the reefs too right?

A drought on land is a drought at sea. Or something like that.

Conversely, a bumper wet season should supercharge the marine environment.
