Hot on the heels of the NT announcing a commercial and charter boat fishing ban at Channel Point, to preserve jewfish stocks, WA has announced commercial and recreational fishing bans over a huge area.
Commercial fishing has been permanently banned in the West Coast bioregion.

Surprisingly, while the main problem in WA is the West Coast bioregion, they are also claiming stocks are depleted in other areas, including the Pilbara.

Re: Commercial closures in WA and NT
Between this and the fish kill problems in SA it's a sad time for many Aussie fishos. I expect to see a few boats up for sale. This is going to affect many businesses. Psychological/social effects too as people lose their favourite recreation and have expensive assets (car and boat) sitting in the shed.
Nonetheless, better to act sooner than later as fish stocks have been known to disappear when mismanaged.
The elephant in the room is immigration policy and overall human population, if the fish stocks can't handle the current situation, record levels of immigration are going to make it worse.
