Qld's mackerel crackdown

Talk about bungled boat ramps, net buybacks, marine no-go zones, mining disasters etc here.

Lot of outrage out there, the stock assessment disputed.

According to a mate over there that attended all the meetings and presentation of evidence, they would not listen to any arguments from the pro’s or the amateurs. Specifically that they migrate constantly up and down the entire east coast. In order for their closures to work successfully, Sydney to Cape York closures should be also included.

There is opinion that they only researched a limited area and have then assumed they are correct in saying stocks are in decline.

In a way, a mind set that they were always going to put this in place regardless of all the ‘staged’ public/pro consultation.

“Have your say” they said, but, they weren’t listening according to most.

I was at Kurumba for 3 mths and fishing was very poor.
Those with big boats that could get past the 40 kms mark were successful with Spaniards when the wind dropped
When they were on, most boats would come back with 4 plus each! typical of old nomads who don’t know the meaning of restrict your catch
They will be the first to whinge when stocks fail

4 fish each is greedy.

Love the local Mackerel from the fish and chip shops in FNQ but expect the price per piece to go right up and/or disappear off the menu completely from time to time now.

587t down to 165t per annum for the pro’s is going to hurt a lot of folk. There have been issues selling Mackeral overseas and interstate ex Darwin so the gates might open back up for them as the demand rises in the southern states.

700 tonnes per year in the 1990s and early 2000s. In 2004, there was a further decline following the
rezoning of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and introduction of a total allowable commercial catch
(TACC) of 619.5 tonnes. Commercial harvest has remained stable since this time at about 300 tonnes per
year and approximately 50% of the TACC has been caught each year on average.
Recreational harvest has also remained relatively stable since 2004 at around 180 tonnes each year
(including charter).

The new bag limits don't bother me.

I understand the pros are hurting but they don't actually own the fish stock. Neither do we rec fishos. It's a public resource and should be managed across all users to ensure viability (like they're doing)

If their stock assessment is correct yes, good management. If not, terrible for the people affected.

Qld has already lost jewfish as a fishery, as their management rules out fishing for them most of the year.

Lots of species bans in other states, eg snapper in SA, gar in metro WA.

Good to see appropriate management but if stocks really are so bad perhaps there are just too many people on the planet.

Might be better to have a bag limit on kids per family.

Either that or we may face bag limits of one fish between two fishos in 10 years?
