Knife porn

Post by Jeno »

At the suggestion of Guzzo who posted some of his excellent work.... I am posting some of my work! I was very busy last year trying to fill all of my orders and most of that was due to me making a knife for a mate of mine Charlsey Vears who along with his partner runs Yknot Charters. Charlsey was my neighbour and spoke for a long time about wanting to start up his own charter business....he was still living next door when he hasn't down to SA to buy his big cat for the business....I followed along as he did the boat up...got the wrap done and kicked off the business. I said to him I'm going to make you a knife mate to celebrate the boat and the business.
And so I came up with my own design called The Coastal Camper and I made the knife and sheath to match the Yknot colours. This design is not meant to be a dedicated fillet knife but rather a knife that reflects the needs of a saltwater camper. It reflects what do when camping in the Top End.... long fine tip so you can fillet, stout enough to knock over a limb and sharpen it for a crab spear, thin enough stock to be useful for camp meal preparation. Stainless Blade and synthetic sheath in case you need to jump out of the boat and Wade ashore, ceramic honing rod for no worries with rust will not sharpen a blunt knife but will keep you shape blade sharp. Anyway here is the first one that kicked it all off!

Wonderful work Jeno, you make a really nice knife and sheath and your fit and finish is spot on. I have never used stainless steel. Great stuff.

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback! I used Swedish Sandvik 14c28n and I hardened it to 61hrc which is right in the ballpark for this steel. I picked this steel for this style of knife for specific reasons namely quality, rust resistance and sharpen ability...which is important! There are super steels capable of higher hardness and extreme edge retention, but these steels can/are difficult to sharpen often requiring expensive high end stones to do the job. Most owners won't have these stones and if they do they won't be in the car or the boat when you need them. So some thought has gone into steel selection! So too with the handle material, I chose G10 because it is food grade suitable meaning it won't pick up any fish or meat stink.. easily cleaned and extremely hard-wearing....again thought going into the primary use brief for this knife that being a do all around the camp for those that camp in coastal environs from the Kimberley to Cape York!

Hey Jeno, is your mark salt water etched? If so where do you get your stencils. I usually hot stamp mine but not on thin blades so will most likely saltwater electro etch mine from now on.

Yes, I do an electro chemical etch. I had my stencils done by a mob in the US, you need to be able to send your design to them in the format they request and then they do the stencil. I chose to get them done this way because you get the detail and you get a very good outcome.

Would you like me to send you the link?
