The western areas rivers have big catchments and floodwaters tend to take longer to move.
On the east coast above the Burdekin R, the mountains come closer to the coast so there are numerous smaller rivers which run quickly and go up and down rapidly. That's a bit of a saving grace (if there is one in a flood).
