Motor won't start... Any ideas

Post by balou »

Planning to take the mud boat for a run tomorrow.

Got everything ready and cranked the motor over. bl..dy motor tries to crank over but doesn't start.
Found the lanyard disconnect so connect it back again. Still nothing.

The motor a 2007 90 etec...don't laugh.

The motor sound like its laboured like low battery but everything else works fine.

Checked the fuse ..all good.
Checked and cleaned battery terminals...all good
Sprayed the dual battery switch with contact cleaner
Checked the positive and negative on motor ....all tight
Multimeter at battery and motor at 12 v.
Battery 3 month old.

Decided to pull a battery out of the big boat but still nothing.

The same thing happened about 3 months ago and it came good the next day. I have a dozen run with it without any dramas .

Any ideas before it goes into the shop...

Just finished switching everything to the big boat.

Might be worth pulling out the kill switch and make sure that isn't rusty and not working. Does it prime up and get hard and stay hard, may be sucking air somewhere along the way as suggested above.

Balou, usually following the rule of three sorts out the issues... fuel, spark and air... Is it getting fuel... Is it getting spark... Is it getting air? Noticed the entries above... Check the spark plugs and air filter if it's getting fuel. Good luck buddy...

If the motor is cranking then it's probably not your electrics.

Check your leads from the battery to the motor thoroughly. If a leads been damaged it can corrode out inside the casing. Happened to me

Took the big boat yesterday and slayed afew cockies. God I love my Suzi 175.

Now back to this blasted Etec that won't start. Thanks everyone for there input.

The fuel primer bulb pumps hard and remains hard.
Check the battery to motor wire all good there.
Full service completed 3 months ago by TM but I pulled out the spark plugs and gave them all a clean.
I noticed one of the grounding wires on the 2nd spark plug lead had snapped off. The wire doesn't seem to go anywhere just wraps around the lead but I twisted it back together.

Still no joy.

Does the ground wire do anything?

The battery might be half rooted from all the cranking. Sitting on 11.9 and dropping to 7.9 on the crank. I will borrow battery charger tomorrow and give the bat a charge up.

The emm diagnostic on side of motor said the lanyard kill switch is good. But could still be the issue.

That's pretty low voltage. Could be a bad battery, cell or just flogged from trying so hard.

Simple, remove the etec from transom and reposition at bow, where an anchor is meant to be. It will then give years of trouble free service. Other than that 7.9 is way too low on cranking and will not let the fuel pump and engine management fire it. Get a good battery and try it again.

After purchasing a new battery and 2 trips to dealership. The intermittent starting issue was due to a stuck starter motor. TM rebuilt it and which cost me 3 hours labour in total which isn't a bad result in terms boating.

Thanks everyone for their input especially fff1964 who chase his guru etec service tech from interstate for information.

My 140 Suzi upgrade will have to wait afew more years.
