Re: Boating test
Went for my coxswains years ago, memorising all those little back ball and triangle symbols turned me right off, made me bail.
Bit cruel having to make a barra guide learn all those symbols just to get a coxswains to work rivers and the inshore waters, maybe there should be a simpler, more targeted cert for barra guides just covering sea skills, coastal and river geography, first aid and how to entertain punters when fish are quiet

Re: Boating test
This is not the way forward Matt. I see the consequences of downgrading expectations of skill levels to match the newer generation of candidates every day in the construction industry. Make it harder and weed out the ones without the genuine interest and passion not easier so we tick off more jobs created, we are spiralling backwards for a disaster the way we train and dish out qualifications now days.Matt Flynn wrote:Went for my coxswains years ago, memorising all those little back ball and triangle symbols turned me right off, made me bail.

Re: Boating test
100% AM. People just want the easy way out these days.
Jeff, most people do the right thing BUT i saw a bloke the other day push in front of 6 boats patiently waiting in line to retrieve.

Re: Boating test
Doesn't have to be going backwards, just move it sideways with training appropriate for the job. Can't see any need for a barra guide knowing all the black balls and triangles etc.
Needs to be trained to tie a lure while popping tinnies for clients, while entertaining client's missus with banter, while avoiding the conga-line trolling lines, while watching sounder, knowledge where the rockbars are, know how to make good sangers, and how to live on four hours sleep ...
bl..dy black balls and triangles, sheesh ...

Re: Boating test
They still have to come in and out of the harbour sometimes Matt.
Hell we even have markers at Dundee now .
I don't like looking at Black Balls either

Re: Boating test
Yeah the black balls gave me a hard time as well when i did mine. i tried a similar argument with my examiner but he said 'when you get your coxswains, they dont restrict you to billabongs. its an open ticket'Matt Flynn wrote:......
