What is your Favorite (go to) Knots that you use?

Post by Fisherman-Rob »

Hi All,

Just a suggestion .. it would be great to maybe have all of us say what our favourite go to knots are that you use out there in the field? and possibly why you use that particular knot?

ok .. I'll start if you like ....

BRAID TO LEADER KNOT: I Use the 'Improved Albright' or the 'Slim Beauty' knot. (I have researched these and even Youtube them for my own reference on my mobile as well :) lol. Everybody seems to say these are two great knots to use for Braid to leader knot connection. So use these two for that).

MONO LEADER to LURE KNOT: I use the 'Loop knot' for its easability and quick tying whilst out in field. I believe this is a great knot to use and has non-slip characteristics, which is what I am after :) lol

TYING HOOKS: I use the 'Snell Knot' for tying either single hooks or multiple hooks on the same line as well. Great Knot and serves me well.

What do you guys use?

Would be great to see everybody responds and hopefully we open up our own repertoire of knowledge and expand it further....

Cheers Robert

To tie nylon monofilament to a swivel, use a three turn Centauri knot, will not distort the line as a blood knot does, works on a wide range of line diameters.

for braid to leader I tie the Tom Jones knott (I think this is what it is called) and a double either a bimini twist or spider hitch depending on how quick I need to tie them. If sitting at home with nothing to do I tie the FG knott. The FG is the stronger of them and doesnt require a double but takes a few minutes to tie where as the Tom Jones and spider hitch takes 30 seconds.

I use a blood knott for leader to hooks.

Leftys loop or a perfection loop for lure to leader.

I WAS a fan of the FG knot until i went on a charter to the reef. the guide (who has tied hundreds of them) tied one for me and it failed with a fish on. big fish too
the kiwis all used the PR knot which was thin as the fg but took ages to tie.

i use the improved albright for leader-main and the loop to tie tackle on

Albright for braid to leader, and locked half-blood for terminal gear.
Harrisons loop for lures.

Improved Albright.

Perfect loop, it looks hard but if you can tie a bowline it's pretty much the same thing.

Heavy braid to leader (20lb+ to 20lb+) = FG.
Takes some practice and be prepared for plenty of frustration but once mastered you will struggle to tie another knot. I find that below 20lb in fluro leader the diameter can be a problem, i.e. slippage (actually maybe I haven't mastered it yet...). But certainly for your typical barra set up; 20/30lb braid to 40/60/80lb leader it's the go IMO.

Light braid to leader (<20lb to <20lb) = Double Uni.
Simple, super quick and as with the FG you will break your loop knot on your lure before it fails. Too chunky in heavier line.
