You might find this of interest about 12 volt winches. Boat winches operate in exactly the same way except the winch-loads are a bit less in a boat (unless the anchor gets stuck). I think it explains why your friend got himself into so much trouble as the voltage dropped further and further as he kept winching.

In your case you have a 500 watt (ballpark figure) winch. That makes 42 amps on first draw. As voltage drops further and further the 500 watt requirement remains so the current draw has to go up. By the time the voltage gets to the rated low voltage (10.6 volts) the current draw is up to 500/10.6 = 48 amps and rising. At those current draws the bum falls out of the battery rated capacity.

But I must intercede again....

Good idea Sy.

Would you like a 4 page dissertation on why I don't share your enthusiasm for C-Tek chargers? I'm sure that'll get the thread back on track.

I can live with a difference of opinion about a subject.

I won't live with remarks about bagging or sledging.

Simple as that.

I've done a bit research as well and think this pretty much sums it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism

An obvious self-focus in interpersonal exchanges
Problems in sustaining satisfying relationships
A lack of psychological awareness (see insight in psychology and psychiatry, egosyntonic)
Difficulty with empathy
Problems distinguishing the self from others (see narcissism and boundaries)
Hypersensitivity to any insults or imagined insults (see criticism and narcissists, narcissistic rage and narcissistic injury)
Vulnerability to shame rather than guilt
Haughty body language
Flattery towards people who admire and affirm them (narcissistic supply)
Detesting those who do not admire them (narcissistic abuse)
Using other people without considering the cost of doing so
Pretending to be more important than they really are
Bragging (subtly but persistently) and exaggerating their achievements
Claiming to be an "expert" at many things
Inability to view the world from the perspective of other people
Denial of remorse and gratitude

Just for another spin at the battery v winch thing. The three stage rotronics system on the LC won't allow the winch on with the alternator . Will only winch off battery off which there are two aux.He says the alternator must be protected from the winch while operating winch and it's an auto feature. Stall speed draw on the warn is 425amps at 12 volts so he is technically correct. Power going to winch and power pack via 175mm2 double insulated welding earth cable so no drop there, was surprised the draw on the an hour which is so low, just another idea into the mix

Good info Andy.

I guess the bottom line is to be wary of boat winches unless u have the battery power to accommodate it.

I know a fella who has a 3.8m tinny. A salesman talked him into getting a 24v 54lb thrust electric and now he has trouble charging 2 x 12v batteries in the boat. Be no room for fishing gear.

He was about to get a canopy of solar panels. True.

I've gotta put together episode 2 for these fellas. Gotta go.
