Lower Mary Recreational Fishing Barramundi Survey

Post by Matt Flynn »

AMATEUR FISHERMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF THE NT INC.

MEDIA RELEASE
18 September 2013

AFANT Press Release

The Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the NT Inc (AFANT) is working towards removing the seasonally closed areas on the lower Mary River management zone.

AFANT has welcomed the CLP Governments commitment to create a recreational only barramundi fishing area from the southern part of Fog Bay to Kakadu NP and looks forward to working with the NT Government to deliver the maximum benefit from the new recreational only barramundi fishing areas.

“As part of this process AFANT is working with the NT Fisheries division to conduct targeted research into fish release survival and any potential catch effort impact on barramundi and threadfin salmon in the lower Mary River system”. Said AFANT President Warren de With today.”

“AFANT and NT Fisheries will be conducting survival, tagging and data gathering in the lower Mary River system in October to assist in gathering data on the barramundi and threadfin salmon population predominantly focusing on the survival of released fish particularly large breeding females.”

“AFANT is calling for interested anglers to participate in a catch and release tagging and data gathering effort on the October neap tides.”

“As Mary River management zone rules still apply and the tagging and data will be conducted under a fisheries permit, only registered parties will be able to fish in the area and only on the stipulated dates. It is likely that the number of boats may be limited and priority will be given to the first registered.” Mr de With said.
Ends

The fish surveys will be conducted on the following dates:
Weekend one -- Friday 11th October 2013 to Monday 14th October 2013
Weekend two-- Saturday 26th October 2013 to Tuesday 29th October 2013

To register contact AFANT on 08 8945 6455 or email [email protected]

Tag kits, catch and effort data sheets and tagging instructions will be provided to participating anglers.

Leave the lower Mary river closed, If it opens, All the Guide boats will flog the cr.p out of it, Might as well of just let the Pros net it every year,
The Mary River was closed to allow the fish to breed in peace, Why didn't all these people from Fisheries or AFANT do something when the Barrages caused all the fish to be land locked and die. Next it will be the bottom of the Daly river, Where will it stop? Maybe Fisheries and AFANT should talk to Queensland fisheries and find out how a closed season helps to maintain fish stocks.
The way the NT coast/rivers are getting flogged by Guide boats,Pros and all the comps that are running its a wonder there is any fish that hasn't been caught, or taken by a shark/Croc when it is released.
If The Lower Mary is opened it will be too easy get heaps of big Breeders at he mouth of Sanpam or Tommycut with a bucket full of live mullet,
People will be able to Neck 3 meteries so to make out trip worthwhile.
It use to be 2 fish, so great conservation there.
If the closed season is working leave it closed,
Why not put the energy into getting the Finniss River opened back up.
That's my thoughts
Cheers

Where are you fella's intending on staying. I'm not that keen on driving back each day or staying at shady camp considering the late start and early retrieval timings.

Fruity
the intent, as I understand it, of opening the Mary River is for it to be catch and release only for the time frame that it is currently closed completely - so no one will be able to neck anything down there during that season !!

Yeah no worries mate, I was there last weekend, fishing was pretty slow but still got a few fish. Young Zane got his PB so he was wraped.

Jump on the AFANT website and fill in the application mate. I'm sure they are still taking names. Should be some good fishing.

I am doing the second weekend. Happy to put in some time for research, but I do hope that the closed season is maintained there and a the Daly. Doesn't hurt for us to give them a break in such areas that produce so well.
