help with squid?

Post by billy the kid »

hi guys im planing to head down to nitcliff on friday to pick up a few squid for the weekend if i can. i was just after some suggestions on tides i found i did ok last time on a neap tide but not to well on a spring tide. still getting my head around these tides its not just high and low like im use to.
i would look at heading down around 530 -6 and give it a fair bash. have picked up some smaller jigs to cover my range. any tips or if anyone wants to tag along just let me know.

I am no squid expert but with their big eyes I'd say they predominantly hunt by sight. Meaning you need clear water. Neaps and just after neaps in shallow water like around the coast will have you the clearest water. Do a rummage through the squid files and you should find some good info

I've caught Squid many ways and on different tides. Use a float and have a squid jig suspended 1-1.5 m under the float out the back.

If you have a dead bait such as a large mullet, rig it with a few small ball sinkers near its head (bridle it), cast it out and let it sink slower (need to check the weight here), tease the bait back to the jetty and drop in your jig and remove your teaser. Works a treat. It's great fun for kids too. I used handlines for all this.

Get a couple of suid jags, they're a spike with a row of points around the bottom, push one through a pillie and suspend under a squidder float.
pillie is one of their favourite foods, any small fresh fish will also do. Checkout BCF in the squid jig section. Coupla bucks for 2.
Just run the spike throught the mouth and out the tail, 8lb mono is good, won't make them shy off.

Do what oldart said, except skip the bait jag part and use a hook threw the head, Squid will still be attracted to it and you will have a chance at anything swimming past that wants a pillie, When one is munching on your bait have a jig handy and ready to go, slowly pull the squid back to the jetty till its under you. Now lift the bait out the water so he can't have it, this will p..s it off, it will retreat backwards but if you do it in a fluent motion you will drop the jig on his nose a split second after you pull the bait out the water, he will be fired up and attack it with haste, Rember don't have your drag up to tight, they jave soft tenticals and pulling the hook can be an issue. Squid are awesome fun and very easy.

pisssser benjam who you referring to lol roflmfao, you can always do what we use to do as kids hang a dead fish under a float ,night cliff jetty is good at night ,when the float starts bobbing slowly pull your line in to the steps the squid is to worried about the feed its getting and doesn't realize its moving ,when it gets within reaching range put your hand behind it and slowly grab it behind its head .It use to work down south .but there's no crocs down there.

 thats good, made me smile

Just use a net instead bj, works fine. Make sure it has a long handle so u don't have to go too near the water :D
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!
