Which brand of engine?
Looking to repower my Bluefin drifter but not sure what 40hp 4 stroke do I put on it Yamaha Suzuki or Honda? Any advice would be great to hear and good and bad of all the brands.
Thanks in advance Mathew.

Can't go wrong with either of those. My pick would be the Suzuki. Excellent motor.
When in doubt, Power out,

Nice boat, definitely go Yamaha, and choose max rec. horsepower for your hull.

Re: Which brand of engine?
If 40hp is your max I'd go Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki. In that order.

Honda Yamaha Suzuki. All good. My preference is Honda but for you it will come down to price and weight. You can't go wrong with any of those three mate.

Mate, firstly - go the maximum horsepower you can on the hull, in accordance with the builders plate. Brand wise, for that level - dont neglect Tohatsu TLDI's, great power, cheap to service and reliable (I don't have one now and nor am I trying to sell one). My Suzuki 140 on my current boat is fantastic, though the service costs require 2 bottles of lube, though I believe all brands are the same.
I have been very happy with the Suzy and have nothing negative in 300hrs of hard use.
Good luck with whatever you buy.
Cheers,

Re: Which brand of engine?
Some great advice about buying maximum hull hp.
In my opinion the big 4 Suzuki Yamaha Honda and even Mercury have relatively same technology and relalabilty .
To me it about resale price.
I had a merc for 7 years without any issues. When I went the sell my boat 9 out 10 people would not even look at it because it had a merc on the back. Different story in sa as very other boat has a merc.
I m currently running 175 suz and had no issues as it only 12 months old. Great motor.
Can't go wrong suz, yammie or Honda due to resale value but look at a merc if budget is tight.

Re: Which brand of engine?
I liked much about my TLDI 90 - reliable and light weight - but it did not put out the same power as other 90s, as illustrated by the fact it couldn't turn props that most others 90s would easily run. And it was mounted on a light boat.dont neglect Tohatsu TLDI's, great power, cheap to service and reliable
My TLDI 90 had a smaller displacement than other 90s, including the Optimax, which used a similar injection system. It ran best with a 13" pitch prop, which is a small prop for a 90. I note they have dropped the gearbox ratio on the latest model TLDI 90.
Similar issues were reported by another FFFer.
Corrosion on my Tohatsu was worse than older Yamahas.
The TLDI needs a good battery behind it.
I would buy another TLDI 90 if I needed a light motor and the price was down below other 75hp models. I'd only run a small prop on it, and wash it well.
Otherwise I'd buy a 4-stroke. My oil-breathing days are over.

Re: Which brand of engine?
Thanks for your input but 1 more thing do I go PTT or Gas assist? PTT has some great advantages but in some of the snag ridden waterways down south gas assist with its free moving ways it advantageous. Some thoughts please?
Thanks Mathew.
Thanks Mathew.
