Re: Darwin Reef Stocks Poll
Fisheries should be doing a community wide campaign and survey to see what we think.
I reckon they already know what they will do but a survey would be interesting

Re: Darwin Reef Stocks Poll
It's all six of one and half a dozen of the other.
Tighter bag limits make sense to me - fish killed out of season can't breed even if there are breeding season closures. If the situation deteriorates then use blanket closures.
Barotrauma issues will always be there regardless, education is part of it, and willingness of fishos to change their habits.
Darwin is growing, simple fact is there will be fewer fish to share around in future, so bag limit changes are inevitable.
They are spreading the pain over the three sectors, no need to be smashing any one sector.
I am curious what will happen with charters that go half way to Indonesia - will they still be expected to use the small bag limit? And if not, how is it implemented? Deep water there too.

the quality and variety of fish out there makes it still viable IMHO. Even if the bag limit was brought back to 15 fish per person that would still be 150 fish they could keep legally(plenty in my veiw and would rarely be taken any way) with a 10 person crew. The law as it stands means they can take 300 fish. It is rediculous and I always said that on charter when I was doing it.Matt Flynn wrote:

Plenty of palagics that can be released out there. Billfish could also be targeted more as they are seen on nearly every trip.
jew and goldies arent a target on those outer reefs. Those are caught closer to bathurst on the way through. Perhaps they could leave them alone and hit the wider grounds for other fish. This is another thing I have always said as they flog the close grounds first then hit the wide grounds as well.

Matt.Commercial coastal line sector, in Darwin
managment zone no change.
FTO sector, no vessel limit if they dont report higher catches.
Rec sector double upper cut.

There was a "what the other sectors are doing" in their online discussion papers.

Correct.Matt Flynn wrote:There was a "what the other sectors are doing" in their online discussion papers.
In the managment zone Bathurst
to Anson,commercial coastal line
are prevented from trapping fish which
they dont do now.Only operators with
history in last 5 years can harvest. As a
kick the licences with the history are
now worth a fortune.
FTOs in the zone can continue to take
fish until all punters reach possession
limit. No vessel limit, but this could be
reveiwed if they advise managment
authority that they are still catching to
many.Yeah right.Again current licence prices
just went through the roof as no new
operators.

Re: Darwin Reef Stocks Poll
Plus "managing the commercial harvest within the Darwin zone to achieve appropriate harvest reductions" - sounds rubbery, but they are saying it. AFANT will have to apply pressure.
FTOs will have to go by the tighter bag limits, but I'd wager that FTOs will have separate limits applied in due course. It happens elsewhere.
