Was thinking it would be too windy to do much and made a late decision to to go to leaders last night and do some night fishing hoping the wind would abate enough to allow me to get out to the NE and NW Vernons this morning to maybe get onto some macks.
Road up is good - recently graded - arrived out there at 9-45 - running a bit late when a mate turned up jst before i was ready to leave - anyway Chris launched us in his boxers and secured the rig.
Fished the mouth of the creek as a frist drop but there was nothing happening - could hear a bit of surface action but didnt think much of it but something was getting into bait in the side creeks. Had a drop on some likley looking bottom just out from the island but once again no result - things were looking ominous - tide was really running and there were no fish around.
Slipped out about half way to NE Vernon and dropped the pick on a contour - nothing special about it on the finder - 30 odd metres of water. Tide was really workng now and had to use a couple of leads to get down. Used whole pilhard inside squid tubes and jordan rigged a River2Sea squid with a light stick inside as one of his baits. he wasnt down long when he got a decent bit and a hook up - something fairly solid but never got to see it as it busted off really quick - i was thinking shark and was even more convinced when i landed a small reefie shortly after. Rigged another jig and bait for Jordan for the same result - hook up and bust off - this pattern continued for a while until we finally had a hook up that stayed connected and after a hectic struggle i finally landed my first jew fish - a nice fish of about 110 cm. On the board at last and happy that it wasnt sharks after all. The action was hectic all night - slowed as the tide slowed then went off when the boat swung around. Landed 6 kept 4 - best was 125cm, 36 pound jewie. Hooked a nice lemon shark as well who gave me a run for my money.
The only drama we had was that the sinkers were getting raked off during the fight so for each fish i had to replace the sinkers. I used every sinker i had in the boat. As long as you could get to bottom the fish were on it pretty quick. great session.
Had a couple hours sleep when i ran out of lead and was intending to go out and chase a mack this monring but decided we had more than enough fish so we headed home to clean up and get ready for the GF and pack my bags.
Talk to you blokes in 6 weeks time - have to go back to work for 1 week then on leave from 20 Nov till 15 Jan so the hour meter is going to get a flogging again. Hopefully the big barra will be around and there is one dumb enough to grab MY lure.
Good fishin -
Shane
