Re: FFF Seadogs 2016 - ideas for discussion
I think the 2 level system is a good one - however you still need to have good prize for both. the reality is no one could have a chance of winner the comp with out it affecting the way you fish . if like most people you only get to fish once or twice a month it means targeting the fish of the the month even if other fish are bitting better. It means investing some serious time and $ to specifically chasing a comp fish.
the lack of posts I think is for 2 reasons - the monthly prizes are now very small and people have released over time that there is no point posting a small fish because they know a it will take a barra close to a meter to win each month. the smallest fish I posted this year was 90cm.
Have the points for each post with a random draw should help. but you still need the top level with good prizes like the motor guide and sounders. if you look at the number of views of the posts you will see there is still a lot of interest in the comp - just people don't offen catch month winning fish that often.
I think having to enter 2 fish will actually favour those who fish more and increase the gap between those that fish a lot and your average fisher.
I think not including fish from other comps (which ever ones they are) is a good idea.
Also not many people will post a good fish early in the month as it sets the bar for everyone else. like the last few years winners and my self we always post on the last day. (unless your fish is small or really big and it wont effect the comp)

Re: FFF Seadogs 2016 - ideas for discussion
Perhaps this is the way to go: A major prize for Level One and Level Two winners at the end of the year, and the monthly rounds are simply a draw from among all those who entered a fish in that round.
Also a 5cm bonus for fish entered within the first 10 days of each monthly round
Whether the newspaper proof of date is a necessary evil needs to be discussed, especially given there might be interstate entries from people that NT FFFers do not know.
Most NT fishos I think are onto cheats, even if they keep quiet about a dodgy entry.

If you were going to put in a bonus for an early entry during a month, then make it 15 days because the tide cycle is about 2 weeks in durationMatt Flynn wrote:Perhaps this is the way to go: A major prize for Level One and Level Two winners at the end of the year, and the monthly rounds are simply a draw from among all those who entered a fish in that round.

No issues with the way the comp runs, never won a monthly round but end up doing alright by posting fish throughout the year, newspaper keeps it honest, Good tides are all month not just in the 1st 1/2, instead of bonus points why not subtract points if fish are not entered say after 7-10 days of catching it using the paper as proof, as said before why not ditch monthly and have top 10 -12 at the end, might keep more people posting after the 2nd or 3rd rounds
Good luck with it matt, whatever formatt you decide on for 2016.

I don't know how much more you can do but maybe try to make photos load up easy off a phone. I rarely take my camera anymore and use my phone a bit but find it impossible sometimes to load them up. I know its probably me but a mobile friendly site would be great.

Also instead of a newspaper (I have sworn at you so many times matt I haven't had a newspaper lol) why not send all competitors a round card on the eve of next fishing month. We print them out and throw them in the boat where they stay for the month rather then needing a newspaper. Half the reason I lost interest this year. No newspaper on first two trips so didn't bother for rest of year.

Re: FFF Seadogs 2016 - ideas for discussion
So far some good ideas raised and the 2 level system sounds like a winner.
Also like the bonus points for early entry and hope you keep the bonus for landbased
as well ,most of my fishing is 50/50 these days and the bonus points help keep you
in touch with bigger catches .
I think the newspaper has to stay , not sure why so many have trouble with it just
put the front page in a clip seal bag and roll it up in the brag matt then leave it in
the boat .
Maybe the monthly round prizes could be sent when won instead of the end of year.
I sure this would spark up a few more posts and give the winners a chance to brag
about their win during the comp.
The secret to this comp is get a fish up no matter what size and try to get one a round.
I let myself down this year by not entering smaller fish which resulted in a donut .
Matt its a great comp and think your on the right track , a few random prizes would help
spike some more interest even if its just a lure or a free mag .
cheers
Jeff
PS ,,, get rid of the stinking powertail ,,,maybe barra and dolphin

I agree with Jeffish when it comes to the monthly prizes being awarded monthly rather than at the end of the comp.

p o w e r t a i l is the best round out there. Just park up in the ute on a river bank, cast out half a blue salmon and drink cans. Every 5 minutes some thing massive is gonna go bump in the night. Hang the hell on. Usually a huge sting ray but could be any thing!

Thanks again for all the feedback.
Powertail round sorts the men from the boys
Will knock together a draft of 2016 comp for comment in early January.
Edo, it is easier for me to post it all at the end of the year, just a one-man band here and I am already maxxed out timewise.
Plus I usually just had to post it all to Cuddlescooper in one big bag anyway

Re: FFF Seadogs 2016 - ideas for discussion
Don't know if I have a right to comment as I fished the first comp and for no specific reason other than getting the time have not fished in one since. But will be back when retirement kicks in.
The first comp was all about Barra so my personal aim was to post a legal fish every month. It was not about winning prizes it was a personal goal and I just missed out but it was not without putting in a big effort spending some long nights out on the Adelaide and Hardies.
I think your newer format is good as it drags in a broader range of players and sees more widespread grounds.
What about getting the better fishos to take the stragglers out for half a day on the comp weekends, say Saturday morning before leaving them to their own for the rest of the day and on the Sunday to try out what they have learnt. Everyone catching fish would only enhance the comps interest.
If it is all about winning prizes you are fishing for the wrong reasons.
Cheers

Agreed. I'd gladly drop the prizes and have a comp that runs on earning merit. If it is all about winning prizes you are fishing for the wrong reasons.
And it would be interesting to see how many registrations there would be without prizes, I suspect not many unfortunately.

Matt you are probably right but everyone should have a look at themselves if that is the case, it is unfortunate the world is moving this way. Prize's are just symbolic. Recognition by your mates is a far greater everlasting experience. I loved nothing better than saying to the cheese and kisses I'm off for the night to catch just one fish to register for the FFF comp, she always said I was mad. I know a few of the guys that are always up there in the comp still today are of the same mind set.Matt Flynn wrote:Agreed. What has happened over the last few years with Matt promoting the comp and all the guys running it on the ground is exceptional (no baggers of the volunteers please) .
It is and will always be for me the smell of the chase, I hope it is contagious.
Hopefully some of the old stalwarts that have dropped off will see this and will post a reply of what they think.
What better prize could you get than to say to everyone on here I caught a scoring fish in every round. and had a great time doing it with my mates
Sorry for raving on
Cheers grumpy
