FFF Seadogs Round 5 - Tuna

Post by Matt Flynn »

Posting this up early - tuna are the Seadogs species for July. Post your entries from July 1.

Finding mackies might be a bit tricky, but there's no excuses for not finding tuna!

Several schools of tuna in the harbour this afternoon, in the shipping channel, between Larrakeyah and Talc head.

One day early! Damn! Chased the birds around East and Lee Pt on Friday and Saturday, we didn't get many but I did get my biggest ever tuna.

Highlight was parking the boat up at Nightcliff and jumping out for coffee, bacon and eggs at the mobile cafe. Conditions were amazing.

Hope I can find them back on Melville!

Nice looking Longtail 279

Better make sure you get one for July after that!!! :)
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!

I'm not in the comp (next year for sure!) but here's a tuna and mack picked up Sunday morning. The tuna was caught drifting a pillie 1km north of razorback, the mack was caught while reeling a small redfish up on razorback itself. Thought I'd been sharked; 60lb mono leader and 4/0 hooks survived the challenge for a nice fish. Also plenty of big flags (45cm+) and cod. Plenty of snip-offs on the livebait while on the pick at razorback but only sharks after we switched to wire. Lost a couple of big fish bottom bouncing, guess the 60lb leader will be 100lb next trip........ Beautiful day with plenty of tuna busting up all around, unfortunately there were one or two boats who'd drive right up to the school and sound them straight away. Frustrating but not unexpected......

And I'll make sure the camera is in the boat next time!

Well I finally put the newspaper in with a fish. Only a small one at 68cm but its better then nothing to get started.

Caught in the harbour on my first cast for the afternoon. Cast under a single bird. Didnt see any fish bust up and was half heartedly winding back when it struck. Got to get lucky sometimes:lol: I think the fishing gods are feeling sorry for me not putting the paper in with the other four fish. Funny thing is they are all the same sizes at 67 and 68cm. :?

Sorry no photo holding it as I was fishing by myself today.

Hey nomad, was good to say hello to you yesterday and put a name to a face. Sorry I wasnt more talkative as I was late for an occasion (fishing doesnt always come first, Apparantly  ).

Any way I think the fish were there and I did see a couple of fleeting pods but I dont think the bait had schooled yet for them to bust into on the surface. I found a few good schools of tuna on the sounder after the small bust ups but they were moving to quick to target. I think the next couple of days will fire as the water gets that little bit more clarity( Just as i go back to work, awsome :banghead: ) :bricks: .
