It's like anything buy the best at the time that you can afford. (fast taper and lifetime warranty would be a good start)

When it comes to rods I like a good discount. I will buy when on special but do enjoy cruising the racks at second hand shops. Every now and then you can find a bargain. Then when it breaks you get another chance to look for another bargain. I have raider rods that I bought for $25 and luckily I can repair guides myself as i put my rods through hell. I have broken too many rods to want to spend hundreds on a rod that will be trodden on and tangled in trees and overgrowth in small creeks. I shove them underwater to push lures off snags and always have a few in the boat in case something goes wrong again (usually at least 4 baitcasters when alone). I have a good range of rods in different brands and always look for high carbon content. Will find a G loomis one day and maybe a venom at the right price but the way I break rods and now with the kids help I will stick with value for now. Yes guides do pop out way too often so I carry superglue most of the time as it allows a temp fix quickly.
how many is enough lures, rods and reels. Is there a magic number, considering you usually only catch 1 fish on a single lure on the one rod and reel your casting with.

always been reluctant getting two piece rods , does not effect its performance john ?

Funny You should say that, it's a 1.5 like a jigging rod and I brought mine of the rack and didn't notice it was a two piece until I got it home. Caught plenty of fish with it now and I run 50lb over it and don't go gentle on it as I fish tight cover alot and it eats it up.

Cheers,

John.

I like ugly sticks, you can almost tie them in a knot and they dont break.
G Loomis are nice & light but they snap so easy, even a Powertail can snap them
