Can a baitcaster be used on a spin rod?

Post by DrRuff »

Hi All,
A mate has been getting into fishing a bit, for Christmas his missus bought him a live fibre blade n tails spin rod under the advice of a shop in Brisbane. He has asked me if he could use a baitcaster on I as well and I couldn't answer this; aside from the difference in guides and reel seat grip type are there any reasons why it can't be used with a baitcaster on the odd occasion? Do these rods have a spine or are they only intended to bend one way?

Cheers,
Andrew

The guides and reel seat being different are a good enough reason not to use a bait caster on a spin rod or vice versa. But the rod is designed to only bend one way

Thanks Kp. He's bought himself a decent spin reel for which his missus bought this rod. I've sent him an Abu C4 I had spare and he was thinking of trying it on this rod before spending coin on a rod, I'll let him know that can not be done!

Cheers,
Andrew

Hit the nail on the head. The spine of the road is only designed to bed one way.

Only designed to bend one way?
When you cast heavier lures they bend way back one way, then with a fish on they bend the opposite direction

Its a big difference being under load from a 100gm lure and 10kg fish. It can be done but it ain't designed to do it! Eventually the rod will break. If you aren't that worried about the rod do it. If its a pride and joy I wouldn't.

Just don't highstick, you can set the drag as hard as you want as long as the reel takes more of the load. If you only want to do it occasionally it wont matter but I guess it depends on the nature of the material of the rod. I had an Ugly Stik I used arsup for years before I got around to restripping it and getting the runners back around the right way. Still got the rod, be over 30 years old now.

How many casts do you do bending it backwards to each 10kg fish?
