Re: Fitzroy Net Free Zone
Until we get a fish by pass up and running so fish can migrate and breed properly will only have the small numbers we used to have before that barrage was put in. Barra, mangrove jack and mullet need to migrate to fresh to build up the numbers. With current fish ladders not doing its job its not going to happen anytime soon.
With salt levels in Fitzroy higher due to lack of rain will find most barra up above Gavial Creek as looking for fresh water to mix with the salt. They tend to hide on the bottom the salt levels are too high for their usual preference. Before the barrage was built they would move up river to where fresh meets salt section like it does on the Boyne River.

Re: Fitzroy Net Free Zone
I didn't catch it, ninjafish.
Had been fishing a set of rocks for 2 hours for a few small barra and king threadies when a boat came a pulled up nearby.
Second cast and they hooked this. No justice in this world. Mate was p....d.
She (genuine saltwater "she") took 20 minutes to get in and was exhausted. Guys spent 45 minutes reviving her.
They were a bit short of a couple of bits of gear so came over to us.
She was a solid fish.
Based on a wild 120 being around 22kg, I'd estimate around the 26 - 28 kg mark. Genuine 50 lber.

They just keep coming.
Here's a 166cm King that Joanne says nobody's catching.
That's 5 ft 5 inches in the old scale and bigger than quite a few adults.
Try to fillet that!

A monster of a fish and 100 longer than my biggest this year.
My biggest Jew was 1576 and took two of us to fillet!
I never thought they grew to that size and Rocky is starting to look like a definite fishing destination for me.

Re: Fitzroy Net Free Zone
Ninja, had a report of a 1.70 m one but yet to see photo or confirm it.
Have a look at the thread about "barramundi trends". There's some news on there (released last Friday in Rocky at the annual Net Free Zone Forum) regarding some "smoke and mirrors" modified scientific sounder magic that'll revolutionise fish management in Aus. Rock your socks stuff.
Certainly rocked mine and I can be hard to impress at times.

That could be anywhere. Without background the pics are no proof what so ever.
Who's catching them?
I know heaps of people that cant catch anything in the River at all despite years of experience, and continued & consistent effort. They've been using live baits, lures, working the tides, looking for bait & structure, yet come up with nothing every trip. Yet all these stories and images keep popping up describing the opposite. It just don't add up. Ask people like Lee James, Anthony Levy,Todd Anderson & Neville Young how they are going in the River if you want he real story.

Neutral Corners.
Mate of mine is heading up in 3 weeks time for a week. Has never been to Rocky before. He can catch fish. This will be a good litmus test for me. Will report his findings.
No doubt (for me) that it is fishing well/better.

Re: Fitzroy Net Free Zone
I'll be trying again over the weekend with my son, we will be live baiting around the Thompson's Point area. We'd love to catch a King, but sadly we know it will only be Powertail, Eels, sharks & Rays.
