Nice work getting 8.

I've went to Stanage for a quick look a couple years back. The place was packed with the 'Freezer Filler Brigade' from down south.

I'm fishing the Fitzroy River now 2-3 times a week (after work). Still waiting for one of those 'rare' Barras to grab my lure hmmm. Lets hope I can get al least one beore Nov 1st.

Where do you fish after work?

Brother has Mon off work so we're gonna go somewhere during day. If tides unsuitable for boat-fishing, we'll go lagooning.

Jetty beside southside boatramp has produced a couple of barra in last week at night.

After work I've been fishing the snags and rocks towards devils elbow, and the snags along Nerimbera reach southern bank.

Hey

Got 6 today down the river at hole-in-the-wall. Threadybusters.

2 mates got 5 yesterday (mainly keepers to 60cm) at Hockey Stick and on the remnants of the walls on the outside of the snags you were fishing along the southern bank at Nerimbera. Threadybusters again.

Saw a fairly large croc about 3.5 - 4.0 m on the mud on the northern bank about 250 m upstream from the slipway near the Nerimbera boat-ramp. He slipped into the water as we came slowly along the bank at low tide this afternoon. Plenty of slide marks where he's been going in and out all day by the look of it. Keep an eye there and around the boat-ramp.

Nice speckled colour. All others I've seen in the Fitzroy have been dark coloured.

Any idea of why they seem to be different colours? Is it a saltwater/freshwater thing like barra? Seen both colours in the Roper but not down here.

Bob's near the junction is ok.

Maybe try Connor's Rocks on the way over?

I think we are talking about different "Hole-in-the-wall" fishing spots too.

Hi Rigger

Sorry for delay. Been fishing.

I use 50lb leader minimum.

Its a bit like trying to describe to somebody how to ride a bike.

You've gotta keep the lure in touch with the bottom as much as possible. Don't use the lure around timber if you can avoid it.

Method 1
The most successful way I'm finding at the moment is to fish straight up and down under the boat. Drop lure to bottom. When line goes slack when it hits, click reel over and simply raise tip of rod about 1 metre. Youll feel the lure vibrating as its raised. Lower the tip back down to let lure sink under its own weight. Don't wind down.
Watch out that the slack line doesn't throw a loop around the tip of the rod. It will do exactly that if you don't get the drop sequence timed right.

9 times out of 10 the fish will take it as it sinks and you won't initially feel the take unless you have your finger in contact with the line. As you attempt to raise the tip again you'll feel the fish. Don't go too fast by flicking the tip up quickly or anything.

I use a 6'9' rod to allow metre lifts easily and keep the tip close to the water surface wjile the lure is dropping.

Method 2

If gutter, gully or creek is running and you're in shallow water throw lure and immediately click reel over as it hits. Don't wait for lure to hit bottom but start some immediate short quick lifts of tip and wind down tip as you watch it. You'll get an idea how deep the water is and pretty quickly and how to time the lift and wind down sequence. Don't be surprised if you get a hit immediately on the first cast. Again you'll get most hits as the lure drops.

Method 3

Throw out and don't do the quick lifts and wind down sequence. Simply jiggle the rod (sideways slightly is easier than up and down) as you wind in. Don't stop winding but instead slow the retrieve down as much as possible.. The long rod allows the tip to move 3-4 inches quickly imparting a jiggling motion to the lure. You'll feel the lure vibrating as you do it. A hit will be exactly as a normal soft plastic hit.

Which method you use will be determined by conditions on the day.

The up-and-down (lift and let sink) works in the deeper water out the front of a gully or creek where the bigger fish tend to be found more. If water is slack, watch the line where it enters the water on the drop. You'll see the small jerk as the lure is inhaled.

Off topic a bit Ron , tagging has been going on up there for 25yrs plus?
Must be a massive amount of data!
What has been learnt re barra movement/growth?
Just curious,
Barney.

Hi Barney

Sorry for delay.

Tag recording and result analysis has been carried out by a little family company called Info-Fish Services. The data is not just from this area and it covers more than barramundi.

Info-Fish Services is run by Bill Sawynok and his wife Shirley in Rockhampton. There is a website which goes into a lot of detail.

Bill does a lot of contract work for industry and govt depts. looking for environmental changes in fish habitat and population. For example the MacArthur River in the NT.

There are now over 1 million tag entries in the database.

People get what they want from the recapture data that he releases regularly plus the reports from the research he undertakes.

Hop onto the Info-Fish website.

Try this for service.

Fellow caught tagged barramundi at 8am Mon at a site 100km from his home.

He rang capture details through and recapture certificate including details of who originally caught it, when, size growth since caught and distance travelled since being tagged beat him home via e-mail by 12 noon. Had grown .5mm day in 70 days.
