First trip to the Daly
Hi there,
Yes, thanks again to Double Haul, Another first for me, a trip to the Daly.
(And a nice fish on top of that...)
So there we went and I finally saw the Banyan Farm and where all the big comp happens.
And more importantly we fished the mighty Daly.
And that was very kind of Double Haul, as he had just spent 5 days of very difficult fishing there.
Well, I don't know if it was as difficult but I trully enjoyed the experience.
On the first day, he caught the first fish at 89cm, which I found pretty nice, and he told me that this was only a small one compare to what we were targeting...
I started, with raison to wonder if my gears would be strong enough...
And on the same day, just as he was to say: "Lets pull the plug", I got a good hit, the fish literally hooked herself (Yes notice that I said Herself...) on the lure and the line started peeling from my little reel...
Then it went slack and I though that I had lost the fish...
But that was because she was racing to the surface to make one of the best jump I ever saw!
The image engraved itself in my head!
Just has Double Haul turned around to see what was going on, she was well clear out of the water, tail in the air, head down trying to shake that big redish/pinkish lure out of her mouth!
Woow! was the only thing coming to my head!
Followed very very quickly by Ho Sh*t!!!
See the last Barra I landed was in 2008...
And I was just afraid that what had happened in the past few year would happened, that I was going to loose her...
And she looked very determined to make it happen, the naughty girl...
But after a little battle which I should be ashamed to say, I really enjoyed, Double Haul netted it and that was it!
The drought was broken!
And at 91 cm on the brag mat (Never believed I would write that one day) this young lady barra was my personal best in the Barra department!
Haaaa....
Happy was I!
It was worth the wait with no doubt.
On the second day, I got a massive hit.
Remember when I said that I was wondering if my gears were up the task? ...
Well they were not...
The hit came fast and furious, a very short run, a very short pause, another very short but fast run and ... And...
Ping!
The main line just snapped like if this 30lb was just 2 lb...
Now, I usually try to stay calm on the water edge and not to swear...
I may have used one or two words that my grand-ma would not have approved there...
And you know what, Double Haul then said something like: "Here goes your METERY"...
Now, how cruel is that?
To say that I was impressed by the way this fish smoked me, would be a very big understatement...
And I know understand why some people chase them actively...
Then we flicked at some boof along a bank And Double Haul got one.
Then the last morning, in the same spot where I lost the Absolutely Giant Lady the day before, Double Haul had a big hit on a 50lb line but could not stop it either, the fish went straight for a snag and snapped his line...
Must have been pretty big this one...
Then we trolled for "Mackbarra"...
And DH got a nice fish in the middle of the river this way.
And we got a few other little hit but no hook up the same way.
Then it was time to go home, and I started to wonder what had happend to my weekend, I didn't saw it fly by me...
During the drive home, it came back to me, with this 91, read again 91! Barra I got, which by the way swam away very well to fight another day.
And I know that a lots of people on this forrum got some much bigger fish, but to me this one was the best of the world!
... Because it was mine...
And all the good food: Black russian and lamb chops on the BBQ every night.
The good company at the camps, where we camped next to some of Double Haul mates.
How and Double Haul got me a very fine looking barra rod too...
I will leave to him to explain where it comes from...
So now I will just have to test this rod as son as I can, after I will have spend a bit of time with my family.
And speaking of my family, you should have seen the smile and the sparkles in the eyes of my little one when I came home with some fish!
Haaaa.... That was really good too and made the coming back to reality very well worth it.
So now here is a little pic of the best Barra I ever got on the mat, just before she was swam away. (Double Haul even had to explain to me how to cradle her and revive her... That how experience I was with big girls... )
Have a good day,
Pecheur
P.S: And I will now for the first time since I joined this forum, be on the board for the Barra Challenge with a fish caught on the first of May...
How good is that!?!
Thanks again DH!

Hi there,
Thanks for all the replies
Do you realise how long it took me to get this one?
And all the help that I needed?
But yes, I secretly dream of it... Like a lot of people on this forum I am sure...
And yes she's mighty this river... I was a bit shocked when Double Haul told me what kind of deep lure we would have to use...
I think that from memory, at time the deepest one in my tackle box was just half of what was needed.
And I could not have fished properly if Double Haul had not lent me some of his lures.
And ho Mud... If you knew the number of time that I got nothing...
Just try to comprehend: First Barra Since 2008...
I am sure that it is starting to give you the shiver...
Brent, it was not the leader at 30lb, it was the main line, the braid. My leader was 60lb, which I see you would have judged as a bad gamble...
But hey, I didn't know better back then...
Barraboss, thanks.
Hey Ozdodge, Yes to me that was great news.
But I am far to be a champion yet...
Trust me on this one, I am just running an extremely set of lucky cards at the moment, hoping it will last for the next 45 years...
Scottmac: Having a good time and some good laugh... Isn't it a big part of what fishing is all about?
Sy, don't tell any one!
Max, to me a Unit, is the thing on which I have a mortgage which force me to work and take away all the money I would like to have for a boat...
Ok, do all this writing of late start to look like a Logie acceptance speech?
Have a good day guys!

Well, this seems like a very optimistic statement, or a total fantasy...rossco wrote: Next stop 100cm.

Very nice
Well done Regis, Don`t worry, you`ll get your "Meter +" before too long. Did you released the girl back in the water? The Daly can be hard to fish as well to navigated it!

Hi Darbarra69,
Yes she swam away safely.
I was even surprised at how fit she was then and how little persuasion she needed.
I just put her in the water, moved her one or two times, and she started to bite me and slap around, so I took my hand off her and she was gone without even saying bye...
I guess that after all that, she didn't liked me that much...
Have a good day,
