West Alligator Head - Camping/Fishing help needed

Post by Latijan »

Gidday all! :fishing: :drinking2:

Was looking at doing a couple-a-days camping and fishing at Pococks in the near future, but I have not been there before. There will be 3 X 4wd and I would like to take at least one boat for a possible beach launch. Our party would comprise 6 adults and the usual few ankle biters  . Happy to fish from the shore (if that is the way to go).

Had a look at Google Earth but it did not help much for this area. That is...could not see the track going in.

I would appreciate any tips/hints on the area. What is the camping area like? Is it worthwhile for landbased fishing? What is the track in like (especially for towing a boat)? Should we leave the boat behind and fish from the shore? etc, etc. Look forward to any assistance from readers who know the area or have been there recently.

Hey Mate,

Never been there myself but here is the co-ordaintes for the track i have marked on google

12 33 41.34 S
132 14 37.84 E

This mark is where you turn left to go to the 4 mile, so if you follow it right you should be on track or you can follow it back to the highway as well.

I know the track to the 4 mile aint real flash, but from then on, i wouldnt have a clue.

Hope this helps
Cheers,
Brad

Hi mate,

I was looking at heading up there myself in a week or so for the first time but i rand Bowali visitors centre and the track isn't open yet. They originally forcast for it to be open mid July but she said everything has been opening earlier than predicted so fingers crossed it will be open soon.
Aparently there's a fair bit of a flood plain that needs to dry out before you can drive it and i've heard the track is a real bitch at the best of times. Usually that means the fishing will be hot!!!

that track didnt open until september last year and all the camping grounds down towards west aligator are now fenced off, croc problem we where told by the rangers last. check out

the track is usally pretty bad and the last 10kms is very slow going. if there is any water on the floodplain you can find yourself in trouble quickly.

great spot but

Its a bitch of a track! :o You can tow a small boat in and launch at high tide, but you will need 2 4wds to retrieve.

Everything that can rattle off on your boat will, the corrigations are that bad!

If you do take your boat it is Jewy central! 8-)

Oh, and when you hit the floodplains be EXTREMELY careful, there is a couple of washouts just after you hit the plains. NO fun at any sort of speed, and they come up on you quick!! :bricks:

AND WATCH OUT FOR THE LOCAL :croc:

Last time we went in we took a couple of car toppers. Had a good weekend and even caught a few fish.

You should post a link to that last trip Dodgy

Did look like a good trip.
I contend that where you fish is the
most important factor in catching fish.
