Darwin harbour - Leaders - Shoal Bay

Post by Gibbsy »

Happy new year guys here are some photos from some trips late November through to Jan 14th 2023.

Mixture of Darwin Harbour, Leaders Creek,Shoal Bay and even local culvert reports.

The harbour has been consistent through 2022 with plenty of Barra, threadies and odd queenfish about. Fishing was done on both heaps and springs. Leaders creek for us was pretty quiet although we marked some good fish we could not convert. Did manage a nice blue salmon and jack on that particular trip. In December we checked out some local culverts around berry springs even though it's very early on but it was good to see a bit of fresh pumping and plenty of bait.

Did two trips to the bay across November and Jan. Can report main channel into buff creek has shifted substantially with a large sandbar between the last three markers catching us out in the dark. The main channel has shifted east towards micketts side of the red markers. Also noticed there was a second channel that's more convenient before the markers for those who haven't been to the bay in a while, the main channel in November was accessible between the markers end of November so shows it has changed quite a bit. No one was hurt which is good, was slow going with lures but managed a nice Barra in the 80s on a dead mullet.

Cheers

Thanks guys. Yeah you can see in image of boat on sand bar where the main channel has shifted to the east. We walked to the mouth and on a 2.2m low that channel had about a foot of water in it. We were going between the markers on 4.7m of tide height when we got stuck. Had a mate head out same day he got through the new formed channel to the west just with about 3m of tide height. Will catch alot of guys out if they aren't going there weekly! Like myself haha

Good stuff Gibbsy. I did a couple of trips out to shoal bay in December, I was getting in and out of the westerly channel without any dramas on about 4 meters. Could probably do it at 3.5 meters. Image below taken from the facebook post.

The marked channel has been a bit sketchy for awhile acording to this post from DGFC https://www.facebook.com/DarwinGFC/phot ... UaxX8&_rdr
