Flood Watch for the Top End Issued at 10:58 am CST on Monday 27 December 2021
Flood Watch Number: 4
FURTHER FLOODING LIKELY ACROSS THE TOP END FROM MONDAY
A tropical low is located near Daly River and is expected to move in a generally easterly direction across the Top End, reaching the Gulf of Carpentaria mid week. As the low moves east the monsoon flow to its north will tend more westerly and the showers and storms will ease
Widespread rainfall totals of 50-120 mm have been recorded in the flood watch area during the 48hrs to 9:00 am Monday. Heavier rainfall totals have been recorded in some areas, with 200mm recorded at Fish River.
Most of the Top End catchments have been wetting up from the recent showers and storms.
Daily rainfall totals over the Tiwi Islands, Daly District and northern Arnhem District on Monday are expected to be 50-100mm, with scattered falls of 100-150mm. Falls of 150-200mm are possible along the coast and in the central top end. Rainfall will contract to the east from Tuesday, with a further 100mm possible in the eastern top end on Tuesday, and rainfall easing on Wednesday.
Significant rises in streams and creeks have been seen throughout the flood watch area from Sunday morning. Further rises are expected and many roads may become impassable and may isolate some communities and homesteads.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for Daly, Tiwi, Arnhem and parts of Carpentaria districts.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
Fitzmaurice River
Tiwi Islands
Mary River
Upper Adelaide River
