Returning member

Post by DaveyD »

Gday ladies, gents and the confused.
Was a member here years ago but moved away for a while. Basically the same user name.
Returning to NT just before xmas this year. Looking forward to fishing up there again.

One goal ive set is to target NT flatheads. Anyone got any tips on them? I only caught a few whilst i was up there but never targeted them.

Cheers

Not sure there is a flathead brains trust in the NT :D

Mostly just bycatch when fishing harbour arms.

Maybe its something ill try figure out. Once caught 3 of them at the end of stokes hill wharf in a matter of hours.
Can confirm theyre the tastiest flathead ive even eaten. Little uglier though.

Years ago my brother caught six flathead in seven casts while fishing at old man rock marker buoy directly out from East Arm ramp. Other than that, I have simply encountered them as bycatch casting to snake drains. Good luck, I suspect you will get some Barra bycatch during your targeted flatty missions.

Hey Davey have got a few near wharf rockwalls while flicking plastics for Barra and the odd one when fishing flats and drains. But the ones near the rockwalls were alot larger.

Goodluck

There are also those spiky "rock flathead" that show up on the coastal reefs.

Is a surprising number of flathead species across Australia, not sure how many are in the NT but the bar-tail seems to rule and reaches quite a good size.

I've always chucked them in the box when hooking them, they dont grow as big as the southern ones but still taste good.

Try the front of rapid creek when the tide comes in.
I tried a few years back fishing the channel on an incoming tide.
Got 2 on small green rubbers.
Took a few trips to get them but I like a challenge

Well i got my first flatty a couple days ago sitting on the end of stokes hill wharf. Just using dead bait i jigged up. Went abput 45cm. Such a different looking fiwh to the ones i was catching down south but man they taste alot better.
Curious to know what the little bait fish actually are. Seems to be the litte white ones and then the green back ones. Anyone know what they actually called?

Don't know about the baitfish, Dave but what I've found with flathead is that they are absolute suckers for smaller soft plastics jerked across the bottom (right on the bottom so that they kick up puffs of sand/mud). Colour doesn't seem to matter.

F/head seem to be really territorial and will go for anything impinging on their territory.
