Rig Madness

Post by john d »

Got together with a few guys from work for a fish this weekend.
With a few reports of macks out at the rig of nightcliff it was decided to do an early run out.
launched at east arm at 5am to get there for first light.
Unfortunately the other boat coming with us broke down before stokes hill wharf with fuel problems, which was fortunate for us as it would have been a long tow from the rig.
Cruising out we noticed a few other boats following behind us and knew then we would have company out there.
As we got to the rig at first light we saw a few more boats already there.
Once we got there we could not believe how many were already there.
A quick count had nearly 20 boats there or arriving from all directions. :o
It appeared that quite a few had overnighted there which was brave considering the late storms we have been getting lately, anchored at a big lightning conductor is not my idea of fun
Stuff this was the first thought so put out the trawling gear and did a few laps while we worked out our next move.
Had a mark on the sounder a few ks from where we were so went there.
Jigging and baits were slow for a while with small red fish and a few trevs so out they went as live bait.
Not long a few boats came over and started fishing the same area.
Lost a live trev to something unstoppable on 50lb gear
deckies livey went of next with a solid mack in the boat. 8)
By them there were 5 other boats fishing the mark a quick count had over 30 boats at the rig and scattered around at various other marks.
I managed two smaller macks and we kept a few reasonable red fish. :D

last livey went to a big reef shark.
By 9.30 decided to head back in so put out the trawling gear again and headed to the rig.
Hooked up near the rig but dropped it.
After that ran back in and was of the water before midday.
Fantastic weather all morning making it a good run out and back
