Minn Kota rust repair

Post by theodosius »

Hi guys, any tips on repainting my motor housing? Or am I better off leaving it alone?

If it is still working ok I wouldn't touch it.

The reality is that the head unit is already mortally wounded by rust and the adverse effect will only accelerate. The rust that you can clearly see is only a part of what's under the paint (bit like an iceberg).

Painting over the rust will be simply be a cosmetic exercise.

I'd be more worried about what the rust is doing/has done to the seals front and back. Rust buildup on seal edges will allow (if it hasn't already) entry of water into the head unit and that'll be the final nail. Usually at the most inconvenient time and place.

My thoughts would be a replacement electric motor and any work that you do on this one is simply buying time.

Sooner or later (probably sooner), it WILL fail due to the rust.
Regards
