Took my son Jarryd down to King Ash Bay to fish the McArthur River over the neaps. Trip has been in the planning for a while as you need the smaller tides for water clarity and have to get in early enough before the Nomads arrive. :D

We managed 35 barra on fly for four days fishing which is pretty ordinary compared to most years. Water temp was up to 36DegC and air temp was hovering around 42 with 99% humidity by 9am so it was really tough going.

Jarryd ended up upgrading his PB barra a couple of times for the trip but ended up with a 116cm sight cast in 2ft of water on a 25lb tippet. For those non-fly fishermen that is probably the most epic capture that you could ever dream of. I probably ripped him off by a cm or two as the brag mat shot shows the mouth well and truly over the 0cm mark but with the heat and stress on the fish we wanted to get it back into the water as quick as we could. Thankfully It swam away strongly after a couple of minutes swimming beside the boat.

He did well to sight cast that barra! I reckon I'd blow it if I ever had that chance- too much pressure and adrenaline!!

That's an impressive fish on the wand, well done.

Those conditions sound marginal ... reckon I'd keel over without a week to acclimatise.

I was sitting under the umbrella drenched in sweat with a cold beer in hand trying to get some fluids back in me. That is the first time that I have ever been out fishing and wished the hell that I wasn't there.

Mind you, the big girl made up for it :D

March entry

Post by Maark » Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:57 pm

Christened the new rod at Shady camp and picked up 4 Threadies to 92. The 92 is my entry for March. I was running Gold Strada 130 and a Reidies Big Ass Green, the gold Strada doing most of the work. Everyone was running Green lures, but the gold was a more natural colour to the water. Dropped a horse, sure it was a 105 Baz. Ah well, next time.

Only had one crack at getting out this month so it was a case of driving for 2-3 hours and risking getting nothing or hit my reliable Darwin Harbour. I decided on the latter and hit the harbour to fish the bottom of the tide. As it turned out it was a good decision picking up six Barra and was back home in time for lunch. The biggest came in at 62.
