Sent in by Buzzdog, a mate of his took this pic of a barramundi cod from Reichardt Creek, never heard of the species from a creek before

Yeah they're pretty cool, I really hope that they released it, I used to see them off the wessels spearfishing but they were pretty rare . . They taste great apparently. But they pair up for life I was told. So I never shot one they'd nearly always have a mate with them too. Instead of them 80cm+ jacks were the go aswell as solid red emperors or 80cm coral trout when we'd dive along 20m deep reef shelves or caves in 10-15m but the barra cod were usually in 8m or less around corals.

Another random fact too, for those interested a 50cm mangrove jack is around 20 years old making my mates 98cm one he shot out near a headland in 2010 not far from Dhanya pretty ancient. .. and definitely a lot older than me and him put together :|

Yeah Till ,
It was my apprentice Jaimus, he goes alright. His mate saw it on the trip before and came up to the surface wide eyed  and f#%king spewin he had stuffed it up. He was claiming he'd seen a metre jack. " :bs: whatever mate " they told him. Jaimus went back to the same spot and shot it next trip from its cave it measured in at 98cm he then sent him a message with its pic "told ya it wasn't a metre" I personally have seen a few in the 90s myself and smoked one off cape Arnhem only to lose it to a pack of 2m white tips. :banghead:

I really miss spearing and am keen on a crack at it in a few areas around darwin one day but have been saying that for a few years now..lol. But I will definitely be wearing a sharkshield and 303 powerhead like out there too when I get out there for another crack at it. I run a Rabitech 115 custom carbon fibre rail gun with 7mm shaft and 400lb mono 8) almost as much manoeuvrability as a 110 but same power as my mates 120 with its custom made shorter rubber. 8) originally it was a 130 but too much power was blowing out massive holes in trout and they'd spin off.

I have killed a lot over the years, they don't handle getting pulled up from 120ft of water.

50cm jack is about 7-8 years old then the growth slows right down, takes another 50 years to get to 100cm

See plenty of Barra Cod when spearfishing and line fishing on the reef over here (Cooktown) nearly always in pairs and can get fairly big. They are a 'No Take' spices here in QLD. They are a very curious fish and will often just sit there and look at you when you swim towards them.
Too pretty to eat.. I reckon anyway!

Always cast at anything floating in Darwin Harbour. Have caught a heap of triple tail this way. Biggest one I have ever seen caught was under a pelican torch floating by itself.

Saw a huge one as thick as a case of beer cruising the east arm wharf rock wall the other day at work. Pity I was on the wharf working.
