Floating weed off Darwin - is it seasonal?

Post by Matt Flynn »

Floating weed can be a curse off Darwin when trying to troll. It quickly fouls the lures.

It has been mentioned a bit lately. I always assumed rough weather caused it, but perhaps it is seasonal.

Anyone noticed a trend?

I am not sure about today but when the prawn trawlers worked the area, they stirred up heaps

I've always noticed it more when the prawns are on and have seen it three foot high on the beaches in the Gulf of Carpentaria area when trawlers are in numbers.

Could be seasonal at times but net fishing could also have an effect.

I was thinking. I noticed that a little while ago we had westerly wind in the arvo. Does this also stir it up

Interestingly a quick search online shows that some seaweed beds are deciduous!

But the trawlers are a definite contributor.

Makes sense if it appears in "winter" or just after
