Hi all,
I figured I would put this up as an opportunity for others to share their tips on how to minimise the carnage from bait fishing for reefies, the only way I know is to try and keep on top of it with either a deckwash or a sponge and a bucket of water but lately I've started thinking of other things I can do like having a dedicated kill tank at the transom and cutting bulk amounts of bait at one time to minimise the gunge that accumulates. Anyway, what other tips do people have for keeping their boat tidy to minimise on the cleaning at the end of the day?

Get a heap of Microfibre cloths from super cheap, Ebay. Them every one gets one to wipe squid ink, slime as they go,
Then another one to dip in the melted ice in the esky and cool down.
When you get home, use them to wash the boat and bung in washing machine ready for next trip.

Use jigs :p nah we try and only use what we need at the time and keep rest of bait on ice so doesn’t go all juicy and runny. Alternatively a boilermaker mate of mine has started making bait boards that hook onto railing on gunwhales and the actual board overhangs the water so any spillage occurs in water not boat. I will try and dig some pics up

I use the plastic removeable part out of a cheap plastic tool box and it clips straight over the rails on the side of the boat and has 2 compartment each side and also has a carry handle . It stops everyone walking back and forth dropping bits on bait on the carpet.

I cant figure out how to add a picture

On the rare moments that I'm using dead bait I pre cut a heap of bait on a custom ply wood cutting board (which floats if you drop it overboard rinsing it off ) and leave it in a central location. . Where everyone can reach easily. Whenever it's not in use moving spots back into to a different area I keep it in a dedicated bait esky. a small lunch cooler will easily fit in your bigger esky too saving deck space when not actually dangling. . Towel or rag is a big plus too as mentioned earler. I even bring a small container to fill with water to rinse off the gunk as you rebait instead of it getting on your reel handles or T shirt so i dont have to stretch out over the side each time... top tip of the day unless you have a deck wash.

This sorts out the grub factor ..... But once a fish is over the side and thrashing about on the deck is when most mess is made I've found, with thrown up bait and blood flying all over everything as they go nuts..... it can be minimised by putting the fish straight into the esky, kill tank or tub as it is landed and unhooked ,spiked on donged and bled in said location. Also a piece of inner tube off a racer over the sinkers stops any chips in the paintwork from pisswrecks not paying attention in the heat of battle too.

Kill your fish by spiking and bleed in salt brine ice slurry head down IMO is the go.

1.My bait board has a hose that drains down to the berley bucket , also a removable poly chop board
2.Squid bait is divided into smaller clip seal bags (4/6 per bag) only have 1 out as needed .
3.Make sure the deckie knows how to use a cleaning rags :P
4.Small squirty bottle with a few drops dishwash liquid helps for any dried blood around the boat
5.I have a deck wash and checker plate floor so the clean down between moves is easy .
6.Also have a floor kill tank but prefer to use a 20lt bucket to bleed fish before putting on ice
7.When filleting the catch I have old beach Towels cut in halve to lay on the bait board , after each fish clean over the side , squeeze and re-use.Helps stop the fish slipping around .

Always hard to keep it perfect but I find it easy to clean as you go ,and make sure the deckie knows how anal I get about a clean boat

Gibbsy,
If you could that would be great, a clip on bait/stubbie holder combo would be the goods.

Thanks Gibbsy, given me an idea on how to do something similar for my rig, one of the other things that annoys me on my boat is that I some how always end up the bait bit#% with the good old "can you hand me another piece of bait".
Cheers,
John.
