The Goulburn River and Nagambie Lakes will be home to Australia’s richest and largest freshwater
fishing competition and outdoor lifestyle festival, GoFish Nagambie.
The $500,000 fishing bonanza is set to take place early next year and is expected to draw thousands
of anglers and their families to Nagambie and the region.
The significant regional event was announced by the Minister for Tourism and Major Events John
Eren in Nagambie today.
“Nagambie is one of the best places to cast a line in Victoria – this festival will give provide great
exposure and attract thousands of visitors to the region.”
“GoFish Nagambie will keep local restaurants, cafes and motels busy, and that’s great news for local
jobs, businesses and tourism operators,” the Minister said.
GoFish Nagambie organisers expect the event will bring $30 million into the local economy over two
years.
With the Goulburn River freshly stocked with Murray Cod, GTR Events CEO Daryl Herbert said
recreational fishing in Nagambie is among the best in the country.
“Recreational fishing is one of the most popular outdoor pursuits in Victoria, with over 800,000
adults participating in recreational fishing each year,” Mr Herbert said.
“With ease of access, so many great fishing locations and a thriving native fish population there’s no
better place to cast a line than Nagambie.
Mr Herbert said that of one the unique features of the event is its “catch, measure, release”
conditions and its environmentally friendly focus.
“All fish caught are measured and lodged via a purpose built GoFish Nagambie mobile phone App.
The fish are then safely returned to their environment,” Mr Herbert said.
“This means that anglers will be encouraged to do everything they can to take photographs of their
catch quickly without injuring their catch prior to release,” he said.
GoFish Nagambie competition area stretches over 30 kilometres of waterways, with fishing focussed
on Murray Cod, Golden Perch and European Carp.
The competition is spread across three different categories; boats, kayaks and bank fishing.
“Every competitor that catches a fish has a chance to win the major cash prize as well as other
sponsored prizes,” Mr Herbert said.
GoFish Nagambie will also encompass an outdoor lifestyle festival including exhibitions, education
and entertainment for fishing enthusiast and their families and friends.
“Off the water the GoFish Festival hub, located at the Nagambie Lakes Regatta Centre has been
created to provide a space for competitors and non-competitors alike, to gather and explore the
comprehensive event program including a retail expo, education presentations, entertainment and
gourmet food and beverage options,” Mr Herbert added.
CEO of Visit Victoria Peter Bingeman said this event would be a boon for local businesses and give
domestic travellers another reason to get out into Victoria’s regions.
“GoFish Nagambie will give thousands of keen anglers and their families a chance to enjoy some of
the best fishing conditions in the country. We’re proud to support this event which will see
thousands of visitors head to Nagambie and surrounds.”
The Nagambie Township is located 90 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD on the foreshore of
Nagambie’s lakes and waterways.
Local attractions include its wineries and eateries, including; Mitchelton Wines, Tahbilk Winery,
Fowles Wine and Cellar Door Cafe, its international rowing facilities, eco-tourism and wetlands, and
trails and tracks.
To be held over four days (25-28 April 2019) with up to 5,000 competitors, GoFish Nagambie is
Victoria’s ultimate regional fishing and lifestyle destination experience.
