WHATS GOING ON HERE?

This post is going mad on facebook.
Someone has gone to a bit of effort to put a tether thru the barra
People are saying it’s probably snagged in an old gill net but I very much doubt it.
My thoughts are that someone has tethered it for a barra comp, maybe
If they just wanted to keep it fresh a rope thru the bottom jaw is the way ive seen people do it.

Re: WHATS GOING ON HERE?
Reminds me of a story about someone tethering fish for comps many years ago.

Yeah that is a bit not right. Years ago we used to tether and neck them so they would bleed out. But back in the 70s and early 80s before size limits you would tether them for a few hours to pick and choose which ones to keep.

No! Never! Say it isn't so!?!Matt Flynn wrote:Reminds me of a story about someone tethering fish for comps many years ago.
Knew a fella that has since passed, that used to do this and other things just to win Club comps and the associated bragging rights!

Years ago (in the 70's & 80's) we used to tether them because we fished out of 10/12ft punts only big enough for 1 esky which was chokkas full of pi$$dannett wrote: Years ago we used to tether and neck them so they would bleed out

To me it looks like an old net that it's been caught up in for awhile, once the net cut in to the fish it would not take long for the fish to heal!

Re: WHATS GOING ON HERE?
It is very possible that the fish was hooked on a heavy hand line and wrapped around a snag. The fish has wrapped up in the line and it has tangled around it. The fish has managed to get off the snag after busting off. As the fish has grown the line has cut into the fish and the skin healed over it. The hook would have eventually rusted out causing two ends to the line.
The fish wouldnt last two minutes if it was permanantly tethered up here. Sharks and other preditors would destroy it in a few hours.
It is also possible to be old net as it was caught in the harbor. I have personnally pulled parts of an old net out of one of the creeks in the harbor that used to get heavily fished by pros back before the harbor was closed to pro fishing. It would make sense that the old monofilament would be rotton enough to break off around tangled fish. With out a personel viewing of the fish it would be hard to tell for sure.
