Baby salties in Manton Dam

Post by goldfish »

Another trip to manton for a bit of casting practice.

It was relatively uneventful but after the many km of trolling with the electric and a few hundred casts. I went for a cruise with the spottie. Almost straight away i spotted a 2m salty then about 15min later came across a group of babies in the shallows a few km from the last croc. I managed to catch one by hand and sure enough it was a salty. This is a bit of a concern and would mean there's at least two mature adults in here too.

Reported it to Parks and Wildlife

I see it's closed now. Someone else on FB also put a down scan image of a croc lying on the bottom out there

Trevor Robb posted a pic on his page of that croc Lats. I'll see if I can find it.

From Trev's post: (including shameless Humminbird plug)

"Just spent a few hours at mantom dam and saw this what looks to be like a big saltie half submerged in a weedbed. Love the new Helix 10!"

Used to ski there most weekends in the late 90 early 2000's with out a second thought. Probably take a fourth or fifth thought these days though. :croc: :croc:

Open again, no salties removed, just a big freshie.
Happy swimming ...

Great story Goldfish.

Just curious but why were you spotlighting for crocodiles in the daylight? Surely the rangers didn't leave the gate open at night just for you to be out practicing your casting?
Also, that's a nice photo of a hatchling freshie. The absence of raised post orbital ridges are a dead give away that its not a salty. Nice try though.

All the best.

They wouldn’t bother trying to convicting him. They know they would get to court, and goldfish would be able to give multiple examples if his lack of his own credibility. There isn’t a court in the country that would be able to convict him.

Regardless of veracity of pic, Trevor Robb had seen a croc so it all works out in the wash.

And fair's fair, TV careers have been made out of scaring crocodiles, I haven't see any fines administered.

And you've got all those blokes flying around in choppers nicking their eggs, they have licences that make it OK, eh? :D
