Darwin Harbour GT 30 July 17
I took a mate out on the harbour today to fish the dropping tide for barra. We launched at 11 with too much water, so we stopped at a rocky point on the way to my spot. We had a few follows from small queenies before a massive school of 2kg mullet erupted from the water. Soon after I hooked a big queenfish. As I fought it to the boat I saw it had a mate following it around. Just before we netted the queenfish, I saw that the second fish was a massive GT. About 10 minutes later a big bow wave came up behind my slug amd my drag screamed. After a solid fight we brought the GT aboard. It was 85cm to the fork and my biggest GT by far.
By this time the tide had dropped enough to fish the mangrove edges. At my usual spot we had a couple of follows from barra and then over the next 10 mins saw a few big pelagics, including a big black GT. Once the baby mangroves emerged, we had a chaotic barra session. There were fish everywhere and they were smashing our KO Tàilbaitz. We only got four to the boat but must have seen over 30. As the electric started to plough mud I hooked a stonker barra of 85-90cm, but unfortunately it snapped the 30lb leader as I tried to keep it from the mangroves. Once that flat got too shallow we fished another spot for 2 more keepers, a nice mangrove jack and another decent queenie.
I wasn't hopeful with the neapening tides but I'm glad we went out!
