What are current billfishing conditions like?

Post by JasonFaulkner »

I was hoping to get out for a fish soon down Dundee if the weather and tides out, have been away for a few months and am not too sure of what the fish are acting like and how they are being caught, apologies if it's too sacred to ask? Have heard and seen of plenty getting raised and caught which looks very promising.

Cheers.

Been the best season in years, all the action has been at Dundee. Lots of sailfish and a fair spread of small blacks ranging from garfish size up!

There are billfish to be had at South Gutter, North Gutter and Fenton Patches at times (on neaps), but Dundee is where it's at for now.

You just need to know how to rig skip baits (and swimming baits if you want a better chance at marlin), Deepblack has a good blog on FFF with lots of info.

On good days any boat can do it. The setup can be simple or it can be full battle rattle if you end up a tragic like me.

Cheap outriggers are available, easy to set up and stow away.

Fenton/north gutter absolutely dead, bugger all tuna or bait. No billfish raised for a whole days trolling.
