NT boaters - know the rules quiz

Post by Matt Flynn »

Following the recent accident at the Finniss River, time to revisit the rules ...

I have attached marine "road rules" courtesy NT Marine Safety.

Safety equipment table ... https://nt.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_fil ... oating.pdf

A full safety guide ... https://nt.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_fil ... oating.pdf

And a quiz ... https://nt.gov.au/marine/marine-safety/ ... afety-quiz

Years ago I took a laptop to the local fishing club for people to test their skills.
Not one person passed the test – these people had been driving boats for many years. A couple of them even held licences and one was a coxswain
Scary really

If that quiz is right you must have an all round white light as well as red/green light whilst under way at night? Thought it was just the red and green....

Ive found that you cant rely on the all round light up here anymore. Ive had some very close calls with drunk skippers
I now use a hi vis strobe that flashes every second when im anchored or out to sea at night.

drifting is underway
Under way = Not at anchor, made fast to the shore, or aground - if you are
drifting, you are under way
