Rear Boat Roller Setup for Plate Boat

Post by dicko1980 »

Hi Guys

I am looking for some advice on setting up the rear roller configuration on my trailer for a 4.6m Cairns Custom Craft Super Punt that I recently purchased 2nd Hand back in QLD. The trailer is setup with keel rollers and some skid supports for the hull, but at the stern end is tilting double roller setup with a normal cotton reel roller and a self aligning roller. Given that I want to be able to drive the boat onto the trailer easily, I am unsure on how to set this configuration height wise. The trailer was poorly setup from the previous owner I have already spent considerable time fitting new keel rollers and spindles.

I have driven the boat onto the trailer in the past few times but at times it has been slightly difficult. I have attached a few photos for reference showing the way this rear tilting roller was setup from the previous owner.

Cheers

Hi Dicko,
Without spending any money the only thing you can do is level the roller, it appears to be lower on the right hand side, this will cause the boat to tend skew to the left and go offline.

If you are prepared to spend some money a bolt on alignment arrangment is worthwhile when the hassle of welded modifications is taken into account.

I guess my main question is do the tilting rollers on the stern have to be in the same level plane as the keel roller. If so I will set them up on a string line and trial the boat drive on again. Given that there is already considerable gap I was assuming that maybe they did not have to be in the same plane as the rest of the keel rollers?

Thanks for the heads up

Generally set up the same height as it helps for 3/4 of the retrival until the keel comes off it towards the end.

Try a single one of these.

So much easier as all you have to do is hit the roller and it self centres. :)

I had to dick around with my trailer as well I have all rollers level.
The main thing I found with Mine Was to make sure the trailer is not to deep
In the water making the boat float off the rollers
I have it in fairly shallow so the boat has to Drive up on to the skids and rollers
Seems to work ok for me.
