Engel blowing 12v fuses. Runs fine on 240v.

Post by rumluck »

My 60l engel wont run on 12v, it just blows fuses. Can run my 40 engel with the same leads. The 60 runs perfectly on 240v though. Gonna pull it apart tonight and have a look but can anyone give me any tips on where to start, same experiences or places to source parts if/when i find the problem?

gonna keep it simple but is the fuse size appropriate? maybe go for a slow blow fuse that can handle the inrush without blowing.

Yeah they are. Blew my 20a main fuse feeding the socket at one stage. Dead short somewhere.

We had a similar problem with a Waeco Fridge that was in our Boat. (Not blowing Fuses, but would not run on 12 Volts)
The easy fix, run the fridge using an Inverta.
The Fridge works 100%, and now we have 240 V on the Boat, if we need it.

Thats exactly what i did. Fridge stopped working mid 4 day trip in the boat. Ran off the inverter id bought with me to charge my 24v motorguide system.

What size inverter do you need to run off your 12v marine battery to run the fridge on 240v?

They draw about 48w so a 150w inverter will do it with comparable efficiency to running the 12v lead... well thats what my research suggests. Not proven.

I pulled mine apart. Its had a splash of salt water run down the dc circuit board. Looked ok after a clean up but still wouldnt work. Looking like some diodes have cooked and shorted to earth. Reckon I could bodge it up but it'll let me down again in the future. Be up for a new power supply me thinks.

I put a 1000 Watt with 2000 Watt Peak Inverta in our Boat, which was an over Kill, but it does allow us to have access to reasonable 240 Volts, when and if we need it.
My gut feeling, a 150 Watt unit, might struggle.
It is not the running Power, that is the problem, but there is a Boost of power needed, to get the fridge started. I think the Boost, is double the normal running current, plus a bit.

I have purchased a few of them, from China, on ebay.
