Roper river advice

Post by sealeggs »

Hi there Guys
I just signed up to this sight and thought this would be a good place to
start asking for Advice for a trip that I will be planning for next year ,so any help would be very much of help.
What I have and where im headed to start with, I live in Brisbane and id like to start a seasonal trip for myself to Roper river and surrounding areas .
I Have a 4.7 custom side steer Origin plate boat with a 90hp 4 stroke Suzuki on just a Normal leaf spring trailer, towed by a 2014
Dmax .
The boat has a 100ltr tank and It burns 1ltr to ever 3 km at 30knots .
What info is Camping Spots ,Fuel stations for the Car ,Tides as there a lot different up there than here ,local help to put me in the right spot I was thinking the mouth of the system .
Driving the roads and river crossings and so on .

Cheers Dean.

There's not much to tell, the access and camps are in the FISH FINDER book, most of the rocks are marked. Yes, the lower end of the river is good if there has been enough rain, the best-run-off creeks are well known.

Tomato Island camp is quite well equipped now with ablutions etc but Port Roper only has a ramp and bush camping.

There is some good fishing around Roper Bar at times during the dry season for mostly smaller fish, with the occasional cracker off the crossing when the water level is right.

Might be good for camping, but for fishing opportunities the Roper is the go.

You've also got the Towns and Limmen out that way.

The only place to get fuel is roper bar but I really wouldnt rely on that.
From tomato to the mouth is about 90km by river. The only real hazard in that stretch is the twin sisters rocks about 10 km downstream from tomato island. Stay hard left heading down stream. Stay on the outside of most corners and youll be sweet.

Tomato has shady-ish camping toilets and showers.
Port roper is just one big frying pan of a camping area with no amenities.

Hawks nest island has a bit of a rock bar around it worth a troll. Most creeks on the left heading downstream will produce fish flicking the mouth with soft plastics fished deep. Just about all the major creeks have resident large crocs that arent shy so be careful.
Plenty of cherapin is the upper half of the river if you're live bait inclined.

No body I know fishes the same way in the roper so theres no rules.

tides are very random and can be affected by the wind so dont rely too much on charts in my experience. Just go and pay attention to what its doing.

You can also get fuel from Ngukurr store with own container. Go straight from ramp to store though. Don't do scenic walkaround.

Ring to check that they're still doing it.

Don't have alcohol in boat when you go to their b/ramp to get fuel.

I am looking to do some fishing on the Roper in June '16. Would you be looking to do your trip around that time?
Thanks.
