In the old days, I use a coat of marine grease and copious amounts of fresh water to keep my gear working and corrosion free.
However, I soon realised there is a limit to the application of Grease - you can't use it in high speed bearings without suffering slowing down of speed, and not everywhere can I find fresh water that is not mineral laden, especially when I'm travelling overseas or out camping.
Then I heard of a product called SaltX which is touted to neutralise the effect of salt and you can even use it in emergency situations to mix with sea water and use that as a rinse for equipment. It's even touted to be environmentally safe and non toxic and naval divers use it to rinse out their regulators. So I figured, if it's trustworthy enough to keep regulators running well, it has to be safe on my reels and motor. So I went and tested the product on a cheap reel, and here's my findings:

I posted that findings last year and a friend of mine found another product called Salt Away which claim to be stronger, better and cheaper than SaltX. He passed me a bottle of it and asked me to test it's effect. Sadly, Salt Away didn't work as well for me as SaltX did. Here's my findings:

Re: Maintenance - Salt X vs Salt Away
Hi Lawrence
I have been using salt terminator made by CRC for a while now, been great so far on boat & trailer. Great stuff even flush the motor with it.

That's good to know! We have CRC products in Singapore, but have not seen a Salt Terminator yet.Muddies wrote:Hi Lawrence

Here's a video of the state of my motor around a year after using Salt Away as an engine flush after every use.

After running it with dilute acetic acid, lots of salt and lime deposits have been cleared so the pail of water turned milky:

Finally cleared of blockages. The tell tale is flowing strongly at idle.
