Octopus hooks

Post by balou »

I have been using gamakatsu 6/0 for the last decade without ever straightening a hook. My reels are usually set with heavy drag . It cost about 75c to $1 per hook and I usually recycle for a couple of trips .

Im chasing your thoughts on the el cheapo chineese brand hooks from ebay for bottom bashing. It's about 60 bucks for 500 hooks in 6/0 chemically sharpened.

Anyone using them or recommend another bulk option.

Cheers

Do u really wanna risk losin the fish of a lifetime because I skimped on some hooks. That being said I mainly use jarvis walker hooks from big w for a lot of my general fishing. Box of 50 is pretty cheap. Biggest fish to the boat is a 9 ft bronzewhaler. Never bent or snapped one. Out wide I use gamas or big hoodlums

Hooks are expendable items, use a new one each time, and using a cheap hook is a luxury you can't afford.

I've found the Gammakatsu octopus hooks in 7/0 and 8/0 snap right at the end of the hook, I still use then but it's happened to a few. Hopefully it was just a bad batch, they weren't on small fish though. Cause they are hardened I reckon if they bend they snap.

I use Ausline Circle hooks, these are some smaller ones we have, never ever had any faults and they are not that expensive. If you search around you can find some good bargains. A women loves to shop around......

I never had one hook failure in over 12 years from gama 6/0. I bought 25 boxes of 100 while I was in the USA. Mainly use saltiga overhead and spins with heavy drag.

I'm down to my last couple box so thinking some in bulk to get me through another 10 years.

Might stick with the gamakatsu and find someone who will sell bulk lots.

Um I have never used circle hooks as I love striking against the bite and loading up.
