My Burra Family

Post by drifter »

Hi FFF'ers, I have been feeding a family of kookaburra for the last couple of years.

They have shown me so many things about their behaviour I had no idea about, I have decided to start a blog.
So check it out from time to time as I will be putting up plenty of photo's & vid's.

Any ideas or advice, please feel free to let me know.

Cheers

I have just added a video to my blog. It is the "Begging" call made by all baby birds. However, with my family of Kookaburra, the whole family do this call to tell me they want food.

Check it out

Thanks for the comments guys.
I sat down the other night to jot down a list of things they do that is unusual that I could vid. That list is up to 20 odd.
There is not a lot of info on the net of Kookaburra behaviour.
So when the birds oblige, I think I will be able to put up some interesting vids.
I am going out to get a go-pro or one of the look alikes, as I can't show what I want with one hand using an Iphone.
So stay tuned

One tip i can give is to keep them away when youre having a BBQ. One young fella swooped ONTO the hotplate to grab a snag. poor bugger burned his feet

Nice Blog Drifter. Great characters, love Kookas! Spent the day with a couple on Saturday, putting some split posts in for a new fence. They followed me along from post to post as I disturbed the ground they dealt with the worms and grubs!

One interesting thing I have witnessed around home, just up the road from you (Murrays Beach), is a family hunting at night. Mostly during summer when the insects are thick there is a family that sets up at a street junction where there are 3 street lights. They dart out and feast on insects till all hours. I've never really seen them feeding at night before this..?

Hi NBN. That is unusual. I always thought of them as day time birds.

Urbanised Kookas perhaps, using the lights to their advantage! Having said that it was the previous summers before last; very dry and limited Cicada numbers. So maybe just a necessity for that time for the year?
