Re: Plenty of Sailfish action at Dundee over the last three
Ah I see you were typing the same time as me cuddles I thought about the small wet also but there was a big long wet a few years back and the small billies were thick so I sorta ruled that out but it has been something I have thought too with the small wets!! And high billfish numbers ??
Whats that current "leuwen" or something?? is there a site you can view that on ?

If the south equatorial current stayed to the north and the Leeuwin current was allowed to push further north perhaps these small sailfish get washed further up. Broom is renowned for huge numbers of juvinile sails so they arent that far away!
I wounder if the fish just travel from the East to the West and back and every few years the currents bring them in closer to shore?

I just did a bit of reading and it recons that these fish breed all year but predominantly in summer months. A female may have up to 4.8 million eggs over a 3 spawning period for the year. It also says that by 6 months old they can be up to 1.4 m long. In 13 years they can be up to 100kg. It recons they become sexually mature at 2 1/2 years of age.
We saw some off flat top a couple of years ago that were not much bigger then garfish. They must have just been born! They were swimming in the deckwash outflow.
The theory that they spawn near by holds a bit more ground in my veiw. How, why, when and where now becomes the question.
I still recon they are only migrating and come into our region every few years. Perhaps there is a spawning ground near by they only visit it every few years.

Well that is a huge varience on the papers I was reading. The one you provided there Nomad was a lot more scientific and described the process of finding the data, so assume it may be more acurate. Still, they are a meter plus at 1 year.

Hey Nomad - those are interesting statistics. I am going to share them on my facebook page as the clients are always asking that exact question. Thank you for posting. Sais are still running at Long Lost and landed more yesterday. Landed 8 barra also up to 78cm and a few decent jewies. Good day around - and the weather has been awesome. Flat as a tack.

Emma, on behalf of Frenchy, thank you for loaning us the Tow Ball nut that let us get home. Was a bit of a bummer to return and find out that the nut had gone walkies.
Yesterday, 2/5/13 we raised 10 Sailifish, 5-6 hook ups and 3 landed. Plenty of bait and Tuna around. Weather was fantastic, as was the fishing.
Cheers,

NT BOM has it blowing 15 to 20 knots wide of Dundee on the weekend. Long Lost will be bumpy. Tell me can you eat Billies? Might try catching one for the BBQ

Re: Plenty of Sailfish action at Dundee over the last three
Dundee Hombre,
I have heard that they are good to eat. Apparently they are a beautiful white flesh and BBQ up better than Mackies. They are also excellent smoked I have heard. I have not eaten one, but if I catch one and it is not going to live, I would not want to waste it. I think eating it would be showing it the respect that it deserves, rather than just dumping it back into the ocean to turn into shark poop. I would feel better about eating it and sharing it with family and friends and speaking highly of the brave fight it put up.
If you do cook one up, would be interested to get another opinion on how they taste.
I caught my first and second Sailfish the other day and was stoked. Awesome to see, awesome to release. Definitely an addictive species, even though my Beloved Longtail fight harder, I will be chasing them again.
Cheers,
